This rifle was in an estate auction in Michigan a few weeks ago and I was lucky enough to get it for less than what they usually go for.
I was also lucky enough to find an FFL nearby that only charged me $25 to ship it out, as the auctioneer's FFL wanted $90 + shipping!!

Anyhow, the USPS guy stopped by today and exclaimed "ANOTHER RIFLE!!!" yeah, ok, the box actually says "LAMP CARTON" on the side, I didn't respond ;)

So I pull this dirty old girl out of the box and I was pretty bummed out, lots of corrosion all over and really filthy. Buttplate is just rusty as could be. I started looking
closer and I realize it really isn't that bad, just been sitting in a basement probably and it's been neglected... it just needs some love!! I stripped it and found a early
nosecap which still has the small front section - wooo hoo!! I've never had that piece included before. The stock has an AV3 stamp on the side and the sling straps
are included. Receiver is 1906 Tula and the bore doesn't look bad. In honor of my friend MILIPRB I decided to use only KROIL on this one and it actually came out
pretty darn good!! ;D

Interesting Civil Guard number - It's from Jyvaskyla which is in the very center of Finland. I've never had one from there. I looked on Wikipedia and it is the land of lakes.

Here are the pics:

No [SA] mark? I like the well used/worn looking cleaning rod and the two piece nose cone plate has been impossible for me to find, good pickup, congrats!
It's pretty hard to stump you guys!! Yeah this is the first Finn rifle I have held that didn't have the SA.

Bill, I have had something like 9 of these M28s so far and this is the first time I have seen that little plate!!

OK, now I just looked at the M28 dual sling slot I got from Empire last month and it has the plate too!! haha... I missed it before. So now I have two.

That's a lot of M28's Brian, someone here suggested awhile back that some could be made at a machine shop and that there might be a small market for them, but with that many M28's it's sounds like you might be the best customer. :)

Brian,

Cool M28, like the character. Never seen a M28 with an AV3 marked stock. From Vic's info site, nutwood stock. Have a M27 with a one piece one. Seen less than ten. Most on M27s. One on a M24. One characteristic I notice, even on a rifle with obvious use and character, the grasping grooves are sharp. Wood is damn hard and figure the edges of the grooves withstand handling and use without gettin' worn.

Every one have seen is dark. But shine a bright light on it and you will see a beautiful red color with striping. Bore looks great, and nice to have the two piece nose and a rod. The rough lookin' splice is also neat. Great lookin' M28, like everything about it. Congrats!

Your rifle is also missin' somethin' besides the SA. Know what it is?

Nice rifle! That one has alot of character, and I love it!

My Ski Trooper M28 also is not only lacking an SA mark, but also wasn't "D" marked either. Kinda strange. The Civil Guard number on mine is also intact, just like yours.

When I initially bought mine it was lacking the second part of the two piece nose cap, but by some hugeeee fortune a fellow forum member here sold me the missing plate and one screw a few months ago. Took two years, but was easily worth the wait to finally have that part, haha! Glad you don't have to wait!

I love the "been there, done that, and then did it all over again" look. Not too often I see rifles from Jyvaskyla CG district. Bore looks pretty good so I'm sure it'll make a good shooter. Good catch, and I suspect the price was decent too :)

LB - I don't think I have ever been able to notice a difference in the wood until this rifle... all of this time I have seen mention of "nutwood" I thought it was a goofy way to group together all wood from trees bearing nuts, but I think I am slowly understanding it IS a type of wood on it's own. I don't know why some of these concepts are so difficult for me to accept :)

I had to laugh when you mentioned shining a light on it to see the red color with the striping... that is why there are so many pictures of the side view at an angle, because I can see the striping clearly but when I try to take a picture it does not show up!! I was sitting in the front room yesterday where the lighting was best and I must have taken 30 photos and none of them show the striping.

I don't know what you are noticing this one is missing, other than a matching bolt!! haha At least it headspaces good.

If you dig a bit further into the same M27 article, you will find that what Finns describe as nutwood is actually a non-native European hickory. I believe these stocks were manufactured in Germany. If hickory, that stock would be tougher than hell. Axe handles are often made from hickory. I have a M27 with the same stock including the AV3 mark. Does the serial number on the stock next to the AV3 mark match the serial number on the receiver which is some kind of arsenal number? If so, it is likely to be one of less than 1,000 new rifles manufactured with that stock. If not, it is likely to be one of 4,000 rifles that received replacement nutwood stocks when they were turned into the armory damaged. Of course hickory is a lighter colored wood. So what turns it the interesting red is a stain. On my rifle, I can see wipe marks in the stain that are vertical rather than the horizontal grains of the hickory. Depending on how the hickory took the stain, that could lead to a striping effect. I'll have to take another look at mine tonight as I didn't notice striping.

Nice one, Brian!!...you're the guy proving that even out here in CA, if you're diligent enough and watch enough auctions, you can find some AMAZING Mosins!!!...
