I finally had money and found one after a long wait and him hawing around at gunshows.I have Murrays book and I know it was made in 1948.I am wondering about the barrel and barrelband. The band blocks out the Marlin address on the barrel-Has this been changed or the front wood replaced? It is marked 336-RC 30/30 but the band covers up the conn,USA then you just see the Est 1870.The rifle was only 170.00,I had always wanted an early one with no gold trigger, safety and the knurled top of receiver. Is this common with early 336 rifles where the band goes over some of the barrel markings??

I can't answer your question for sure, but I would doubt it came from the factory that way ( I could be wrong). Very nice looking wood on the rifle though. I love older rifles.

Hey thanks,I have been looking and cant find info.I have Murrays book that has a lot of info in it but no answer to my question.I have a 336 rifle and just picked up a straight grip carbine. Both have barrel markings in a different location-behind the barrel band.

After looking through some of my older Shooters Bibles, my oldest from 1986, and other gun mags it just doesn't look like an original forend stock for a 336. It seems to be cut down some or possibly handmade. Of course being manufactured in 1948 makes a difference. Could be original?
And being manufactured in 1948 it is a very nice rifle. Beautiful.

The front wood is the same grain as the buttstock. There is some wear on the barrel and magazine.I have looked at other 336 carbines and I think it may be replacement wood on the front. Maybe the front wood came off a early Glenfield or leftover wood from a model 36?? the wood looks like other foreends pictured in Murrays 336 book.Either way the price was right at the time. Thanks!
