Picked this one up at the local VFW 720 post show. Nice litte show. Only 2 Mosin Nagant to speek of, only two there. This one just tugged at my heart strings.

Arsenal 296 made in August of 1954. No import mark, barrel, butt plate and mag match. Russian bolt. Bore IS CRUDDY! But strong rifleing. I am hopeing it cleans up well. I listened to the "blood pitting" story from the vendor, made an offer. A bit more than I would have liked to spend, but...I wanted this one.

Well, at $210 (as low as I could get him to go) I'm happy. The rifle is what I have been looking for. Matching to some extent, but not necessary, shows use, non-import, and a decent bore. I've been scrubbing since I got home. The elbow grease is working well. I'd say it ends up as good - good+ bore. But I really like the patina. Gives it great character.

Actually, the $210 price was the lowest price. The other Mosin Nagant was an M44, 1944 Izhevsk refurb, for $349. YIKES!

That's a nice one - it's got the hard used, but well cared for look. Remnants of the original shellac there too, great patina. A good clean up of the surface rust and wood work and it will really shine up. Mine has the same time of oval shaped serrated impressions that you have in the LHS finger groove. Odd.

Thanks! I see you see what I saw :) A good clean up was already in the works. Out of the stock it came. Any rust was neutralized, and cleaned with a tooth brush. Bore looks nice. I'll take it out for a magazine or two, and scrub her good one more time. Stock was wiped with a clean cloth, and brushed with a shoe brush, inside and out. Once all the dirt and grit, and any rust (minimal) was gone, I reassembled, then wiped it all down with a cloth I have that is drenched in cosmoline. Gets a nice thin cover coat. The most rust was under the butt plate! Pitting on the barrel, but nothing bad at all. All of it was easy to take care of with a tooth brush and Blue Wonder Gel.

I'll add an after pic tomorrow when the light outside is good.

All cleaned up :)

Added a few props for the show. Chinese stripper (rounds are bulgarian), and a cleaning rod. Ordered a Chinese 7.62x54r chest bandoleer online last night.

That's come up very very nicely. 'Like' Is that an SKS cleaning rod? Get yourself a Chinese sling if they are still available.

Thank you! Actually no, that is a rod that came off my Hungarian M44, 1952. The patina on it sort of matched the T-53, so...what the heck. Second from the top.

Top to bottom: 1954 Romanian
1952 Hungarian
1952 Polish
1948 Russian DDR marked.

Looking for a chinese marked sling :)

The dirty girl is now a clean girl!......;)

Pahtu.
I'm still trying to get a good pic of the bore. I scrub it, oil it with CLP, and l let it sit for a day. Look down the bore, and more crud is loosed up. It's great! I kinda miss having a woman around the house telling me to pay attention to her. ;)

Seriously, I am beginning to see the value in this weapon, and the more I think about it, the better the deal I got. She's a keeper for sure.

Looks good Gary....every one likes a dirty girl:). Was the bandoleer pricey?
Thanks Denny. Opps! Got that back A$$wards. The Chinese T-53 chest pouch was $55. I bought 2 SKS chest pouches, 1 was used, so it was a bit more. These were about $20 a piece.

I have seen this too. I was just noticing, looking at the picture, that they look like the oval/serrated shape of the rear sight lock seen just above the groove. They could have been caused by stacking the rifles on top of each other.

Of course, that's exactly what they are. Well connected Vance.

The Chinese collected the rifles then stacked them on pallets, and tied them up tourniquet style with bailing wire. We can see the results of this as the vertical or diagonal gouge marks as the wire cut into the stock .

We'll see this damage on the 1980s imports from China, but probably not on the recent Albanian imports.

Wow! Where did this come from? Oh well....updated pic. New (old) carbine rod, Chinese sling (I think), and a 1960 dated T-53 bandoleer.

I never thought of the stacking and binding makeing the marks, don't know why, makes perfect sence.

And, I don't use strippers, so no need to "flip it" ;) Although, that bandoleer is full of rounds on strippers :D
