Weren't the first type changed along with the Spitzer bullet cartridge rear sight change of 1908? Then went on to the second generation handguard? I'm not sure when the late style first appeared on Dragoons, but they certainly began production in earnest with the introduction of the 1891/30 model.

yes, I believe 1908 or so. 2nd to third is what I am looking for most.

My Dragoon, an Izhevsk/1926 Finn capture, is still fitted with the longer Dragoon stock and the second model Dragoon handguard with the shorter ears. I believe this rifle to essentially be correct as manufactured.

there is some debate as to when the lat pattern, aka 91/30 style, handguard came into use...I've heard dates as early as 1927, but I tend to lean towards the idea that it was likely sometime around 1929...
