I just obtained a Model 1895 Russian Winchester. The serial number dates it to about January 1916. Reportedly 9,000 of these were later sold to Spain during their Civil War. I have read about some marks indicative of guns being in that lot but the only extraneous mark on mine is a cartouche on the Stock which is a circle about 10 mm in diameter with the number 38 (in the picture it looks like a 30 but in good light it is a 38). Anyone know the significance of this mark?
