I have what I think are several MN carbine slings. They are web bodied, with leather tabbed ends that will lace closed with rawhide (white-ish) thongs.
Each end has a leather square that the leather tab passes through.

What model carbine are these for?

And what is the purpose of the leather square on the end tabs?

How do I mount this sling, if it is indeed for a carbine?

Its an expediancy sling for the smg's. It can be used on Mosins by going through the slot and then into the buckle, then tied with the things under the stock.

as vic said expediant sling for smgs but will fit every rifle and smg the russians used (or captured) in WW2

it mounts on a mosin as seen here

they fit carbines perfectly they can also be used with dog collars and tend to fit 91/30s best with the collars

Nice pic, that really helps. But I don't see the leather square, and how it's used. Does it take the place of a metal buckle?
Seems redundant as the thongs are there to tie. Can't quite figure it out.
Thanks for the photo.
