I just received a new 58 cal Mini ball mold from Midway and didn't realize until I read the instructions, that a release lubricant was required. I can kick myself for not knowing enough to buy it with the mold. Until I can get the right stuff, is there any commonly avaiable substance that I can use to lube the mold? Up to this point my only casting experience has been with steel Lyman round ball molds, which I've never needed to lube.

+1 on soot from a lighter flame.

You'll know when it's time to 'smoke up' again.

BTW, save your $ - there's nothing much better than the butane flame soot as a parting agent.

Thanks, how long does the soot last, before it has to be smoked again?
I've only "smoked " my mould twice in two yrs.(But I didnt inhale:D) Ofcourse if you clean the mould cavity you'll need to soot it up again ,But dont over do it too much soot can cause the bullet to drop undersized .
