Here are some pictures I've posted for Doss?

Seen at SoS, a break-action, "rifle," faint rifling was noted. It may have been a true matchlock barrel cut and threaded to fit the receiver. Has anyone seen anything like this, have any information on these. It's the only one I've ever seen. I believe the asking price was $1200. Doss"

Pictures don't enlarge so they are difficult to see.
I've not seen one like that before. It looks like a matchlock front end and butt has been mated to the action, making a cartridge gun out of an old matchlock. The action design looks like it's based on a folding shotgun action, something like a .410 poachers gun, but the length would seem to indicate it was made specifically for the job and not simply an adaption of an imported action.

tHE OWNER WAS KIND ENOUGH TO ALLOW IT TO BE TAKEN TO THE MEETING, NO ONE THERE RECOGNIZED THE DESIGN. (Sorry) I'll have to remember to take a partial white sheet to future shows for photography purposes, while red makes a "pretty' background, white is better for publications.

There was a second "matchlock" I meant to photography, headed over to the table and was waylaid, with my short memory, never continued with my mission.

I've been leaving the Nambu date/serial number recording to the Nambu collectors. If no one is doing it then I'll have to start back, 03man is reporting on snipers. A gun show is like an archaeological dig, though all items are mixed. You can still gleam a lot of information if it's recorded and reported to those that are making use of it. Now help me down off my soap box.

That break action is a rifle, about .45 caliber and definitely was rifled, some cartridge akin to a .45-70; yes that long and that large around. It would have been a "thumper" for sure!

Wow, the more things change the more they stay the same... Who would have thought there were 19th century Japanese Fudds? I can just imagine some old curmudgeon cursing those darn youngsters and their new fangled Muratas...

Fudd:574 up, 40 down
Slang term for a "casual" gun owner; eg; a person who typically only owns guns for hunting or shotgun sports and does not truly believe in the true premise of the second amendment. These people also generally treat owners/users of so called "non sporting" firearms like handguns or semiautomatic rifles with unwarranted scorn or contempt.
"See sonny, all those pistols in that cabinet... all thems is good for is killin people." -Example of ignorant comment from a fudd at a local gun shop. See also: Zumbo.
