Hello,

A friend of mine has a MAS 36 that was converted to a hunting rilfle. The barrel tip has been cut shorter along with the forestock. I googled the markings on the receiver and they pointed to some dealer/distributor in CA in the fifties, who performed the conversions.

He got it from an uncle and has never shot it but wants to.

What if anything should I inspect before shooting? I have no past experience with MAS rifles.

If you have a Santa Fe sporter, I may attest that two decades ago I but some rounds through one of them without noticable ill effects. However today, when I look in the mirror, I can see that it was a slow killer.

It is good that you ask this question, as the best advice would be to place it in the hands of someone who can answer it.
We may practice on-line smithing, from time to time, but safety certs are useless unless accomplished in person.

I wish you luck and enjoyment. The MAS Mle 1936 is an exceptionally well designed and built rifle. All Santa Fe did was modify the barrel length and the handguard.

Edit: And add that thumb safety, as I remember.

An old post, but here is a video of one of these Golden State Arms, Santa Fe Mas 36 in a sport conversion.
One of the better conversions, and far better than CAI's work. It is not .308, rather it retained the original French round and had a safety added. A nice find at a gun show if its around $200-275.
