I have a line on an old Marlin Model 28 police gun. I have read that Marlin does not recommend firing these. I am not looking for a bird or trap gun, but I would like to put a few shells through her. Are these ok to fire?

I have read one site that states that Marlin does not recommed firing of any of their old pump shotguns and another that states that this only applies to their hammered pump shotguns? In any event I would use RST's Lite or MaxiLite shells.

The guns are fine IF in good repair and as long as you remember they do not have disconnectors and if you hold the trigger down it'll keep firing as you pump. Safeties, if any were problematical and not to be trusted. And shells back then were less powerful than today's.
It's recommended that you thoroughly clean the gun after disassembly and make sure all parts are installed correctly as its easy to misinstall or neglect to install a part. But it may be a problem because its been described as a "chinese puzzle".

This website has some info but most pics are missing:

Does anybody have an idea as to manufacture date? I believe that they made these starting in 1913.

Marlin Mod 28

I have shot mine, but after complete inspection. Have chamber measured,as i think they were available with 2 3/4" or 2 5/8" chamber. Mine is 2 3/4" but i ony shoot 2 1/2" polywad vintager shells in it( no need in running an old shotgun hard :) ) .

Mine is a Model 28 TS. The model 28 was made from 1913 - 1922, with the TS(Trap Special ) only made from 1913 - 1917.Mine has serial of 11621,and would have been made prior to 1917. So..... with your serial #, a good guess would be an early manufacture, but i have found no refrence to exact date for serial(for the mod28). Only good guesses and assumptions.

Thanks for the info markus. The chamber is 2 3/4" and I have some RST Lite shells on the way.
Average PSI of 2 3/4" 12 gauge shells - 11,500
RST's Lite shells in 2 3/4" - 5,600

I am thinking that I will be ok after a thorough inspection and cleaning.

Any idea if Marlin made these in riot gun format or did whatever PD (presumed) that stamped this gun, have it made?

OUCH!!!!! I had a WW1 TS Carcano (with transverse bayo lug) proped up next to my door with half a box attached. It had the front site turned 90 deg. out of wack, and sling swivel broke off( the transverse front band). Lucky for me, the stock was not broke. I fixed it but was not happy with UPS.
