I have not been able to find any info on the G (or C?) mark that is on the two pictured rifles' receivers. Both have Balkan barrel band shims and Bulgarian pine cone cartouches on the stocks so I suspect it is of Bulgarian origin.

The G marking is very commonly found on rifles that have been used in Romania from those that have been sold to the Balkan area. Its meaning is unknown to me but it could be a property marking of some kind identifying its destination origin of sale.

Thanks, Ted

It's less than a week old. It is now one of the top two or three favorite Mosins that I have. I feel lucky to have bought it off our Gunboard WTS forum. The only other one I saw for sale went for a whole lot more on Gun Broker a few months ago. I doubted that I would ever get one of these.

I was just hoping having two of these G marked rifles to compare might help with the G marking especially since they have the Bulgarian pine cone and Balkan shims. Thought it might be a Bulgarian mark.

tula

i remember you beating me to that one neal. i have a 19 tula but it has the usual soviet 91 layout on the receiver. not the "big hammer" logo. does anyone know the significance of the difference? different time in '19? different production line or team? ideas?

The GunBroker big hammer Tula sold for almost $2,000. I didn't think it was worth that but someone did. I can't remember when I saw it but it was more than 90 days ago since that is how long they hold information; it may have been as early as May or June.

Wow, almost $2000. Do you remember the condition, what parts were matching, if it was SA marked?

Yet, the price should be high, since in the past three to five years, I have only heard about 5 or so being discussed or reported. Correct me if I am wrong.

The only "G" stamps I've come across have been on M91's with Bulgarian stamps. That's only about 4 rifles including that 1919 Tula. All have been in very good condition but I've talked to others that said its a Turkey stamp like 7.62x54r said but I've not seen that. In 1919 Tula used 3 different stamps. The "Big Tula hammer was the first used. A symbol of resistance to the bolsheviks and to lenin. When the "red" army made it to Tula the stamp was changed.

IIRC, I believe the hammer-logo 1919 Tula sold for around $1400 a few months ago.
If Bones92 and I are remembering the same rifle, it is likely that he has the better memory. I was thinking almost $2000 but my memory has always been bad.

Because of my memory and my continuing interest in collecting M91`'s, I've decided to start a list of interesting Mosins and their selling price. I know it will only reflect what the top bidder decided to pay but I think it will be useful.

My G M91 is a 1914 PTG. "Typical" Balkan = m/m bolt #/no cleaning rod/HG has large Aluminum rivet heads. FWIW the G is on the bbl not the receiver. Guess the Izhevsk Bow/arrow stamp left no room on the bbl in the pic starting this thread?
Bought it this summer for $65 ONLY because of the G mark. :)
