The M94 I recently bought does not appear to have a barrel extension. It looks like the rifling goes to the end of the muzzle. I measured the barrel and it is 17.7" from the bolt face to muzzle as measured by my wife's calibrated sewing tape. I was wondering if someone can confirm that this is an original unmodified barrel. Thanks !

Looks original to me . Not all M94 carbines had the muzzle extension . Interarms sued BATF over the 18" rifle barrel length requirement and won . The legal length was shortened 16" for rifles .

The general consensus refers to removing the extension & leaving an ugly counter bore in your muzzle .

As long as you take light cuts , you do not want the extension to spin in the barrel . No problem on the welded ones . I did one of mine , a Bubba'ed 1895 Mauser #35 . Turned out pretty good to me . I left less than a 1/16th past the original barrel . On the welded ones , you may not be able to see where the barrel ends . You cannot look inside , as the counterbore goes deeper than the end of the barrel .

Midway sells a kit to square up the end of a barrel once it's been cut. I think that if a guy trimmed the extension just slightly longer than the barrel (say 1/16th as you mentioned) it could look pretty decent.
