Every once in a while I get lucky while beating the brush for Mosin booty. I've been doing a lot of absentee bidding at auctions and for the most part I usually come out ahead. But it's a gamble, not being able to inspect the items first-hand. So there's always a bit of trepidation opening the shipping box and seeing if you did OK or got skunked. Tonight I received a shipment from a west coast auction where I picked up two lots. One lot held two M91/38 carbines. There were a total of 4 lots of M91/38s at this particular auction and I picked this lot to bid on as one of the carbines was in an old M91 or Dragoon stock w.o. a crossbolt. Thought that added to the cool factor a bit. Both were manuf. at Izhevsk and are dated 1895 and 1896. One has the old, tiny CIA import mark on the barrel and the other has no import marks at all. But I was really pleasantly surprised to find that both carbines are ex-cossack, each sporting a "KA3" mark on the barrel shank. Have a fair representation of Mosins in my collection but no cossack marked examples up to now. Was wondering how often any of you have run across KA3 marked M91/38s?
BTW, you'll really hate this but I got the lot for $117 OTD. It gets even uglier, someone else at the auction really cleaned up 'cause he got the other three M91/38 lots, each with three rifles, for $94 OTD for each lot. That's right, for under $300 some lucky fellow got nine M91/38s! I never in my wildest dreams imagined that these would sell so cheap. But these are strange and scary times.
I'll post some photos in the next day or two. Gotta get my hands on the good D70 stashed in my desk at work (I've just got to break down and buy a really good digital camera)!
