- Recently I got a M91/24 socket bayonet. It is actually a Russian made M1891 socket bayonet manufactured at Tula Arsenal (having the "hammer" mark nicely stamped) which was later modified in Finland for the M91/24 rifle having a stepped barrel and a higher front sight. At the rear face of the socket there is cut a recess 4.1mm (0.161") deep having the diameter of 18mm (0.708"). The locking ring has an altered bridge to allow the taller front sight of the M91/24 rifle to go forward and the socket bayonet to be fixed to the weapon. A new serial number "S 71179" was stamped on the bayonet in Finland. The old Russian serial number is barely visible. The serial number "S 71179" could not be stamped by the Russians since they use the Cyrillic alphabet in which the letter "S" is written as "C". I don't have a scabbard for this M91/24 socket bayonet.
My question is: how rare is this M91/24 socket bayonet modified in Finland for the M91/24 rifle with a stepped barrel ???? Thanks in advance for any help, Lido 02/17/12
