saw a 1944 m44 with this marking on the front of the receiver.
any ideas?

The mark indicates that the rifle was issued to the East German military after WWII. The "1" indicates that the rifle is considered as first class. Some believe that this mark increases the value of the rifle.

An East German property mark which is typically found on the barrel, not the receiver. A good number have shown up in the latest imports, but they are still uncommon and a nice variation. I am not convinced that the "1" means "first quality/grade/class/whatever" as a "2" has never been documented to my satisfaction. Without a "2", why would a "1" necessarily mean "first"?

price at the shop is $200 i thought it was a bit high.

after looking at pics it was on the barrel shank not the receiver.(i am an idiot)
it this worth going back for?

A few years ago I would have said yes, but enough have shown up and sold at the "regular price" of $100 or so that I would pass.
