I'm away from home and my copy of crown jewels. All m41 and m41b would have set screws for the main screws on the scope mount. I can't see any reason not to have them unless the scope was put on by somebody other than the military. All the scope mount screws should be inletted to take set screws. Am I correct in these assumptions?

No , your assumptions are not correct . Originally , on the M-41 sniper , locking set screws were used , but at some later date the mounting screws were only staked with a punch . Even later , I see the screws not punched .

All the M-41b snipers that I have seen are staked with a punch ( no set screws ) .

so a m41 mount could have the holes for set screws but no set screws and regular screws (without set screw cut outs) in the larger 3 holes.

The Swede bases contained lock screws to keep the base mounting screws from backing out as well as two dowl pins drilled completely through the base and receiver.

I believe that the locking screws weren't time or cost effective so they opted to just peen the head of the base mounting screws into the reccess left vaccant by the ommission of the lock screws.

I too have seen m/41's with holes in the base for lock screws and there weren't any lock screws present and the head of the base mounting screws were not peened into the reccess either. I don't know why the Swede's would back up to a proccess they already knew wasn't effective. I can speculate and say they must of thought the rifles were not going to be used so they didn't need the bases to stay in place or that the rifles were already in the proccess of being surplused so the Swede's were assembling rifles from parts and they knew the rifles weren't going to be used by their troops so they made a short cut....Jim

just curious about a rifle that is for sale. something about the rifle just sit right with me which is why i asked the questions. it has the cuts to allow the set screws but there are none present and the mount screws aren't cut to accept set screws. also, the pins for the mount are not installed. i guess i was questioning the authenticity of the rifle. it kinda seems like a put together rifle. also, didn't most of the m41's have unit disc and not bore discs as this one has a bore disc in place. like i said, i don't have crown jewels present to look it up so i figured i'd ask here. below is a pic of the mount.

speaking of which, i'm looking for a set screw or two if anybody has any.

If this is the m41 obie, it did look a little peculiar to me too. However, I wonder if it could be one of the earlier guns withthe nongerman scopes. Lets just say, my 2 m41bs don't look anything like that beat up thing. I don't know what the issues with bluing would have been with earlier m41s, but all the 41bs have great uniform bluing. A lot of my betters here should have more solid information for you on this matter.

If there are no dowel holes drilled through into the receiver , it is a put together sniper for sure . They go completely through the receiver , as well as the tapped holes . Better pass on this one .

AGA m/42?

Looks like you have the m/42 AGA scope on that sniper? Dont know more of them than what is written in "Crown Jewels". Mine is number 208 (costed a fortune here in Sweden). Do you know how many were totaly produced ?

Assuming the AGA scopes were numbered from , say 001 or 100 , there were less than 1000 made of each , M-42 & M-44 . We have never seen either type with a number higher than 3 digits .

With the Ajack scopes reported just under 4000 in serial numbers and a total sniper inventory reported at 5300 snipers , that would leave 1300 AGA scopes if our figures are correct . The date of the 5300 figure is unknown , so if a later date , it is possible that some of each type may have been taken out of service .

We have found no proof of production numbers at this point in time for any of the 3 types of scopes .

Thanks Swede for ínteresting info. What is the highest numbers found on m/42 and m/44 scopes? Feels a little better now that my m/42 came out expensive. It had done duty for quite a while on a civil hunting-rifle before I grabed it. Does an AGA m/42 or m/44 on a sniper raise or lower the price compared to an Ajack?

Usually the Ajack scopes & rifles are in much better condition , compared to the AGA scopes & rifles . Many of these were surplused to the USA back in the 1960's . The majority of Ajack snipers came into the USA in 1996 via SAMCO Global . Therefore , as a rule of thumb , the Ajack snipers will bring more money , despite the AGA scopes numbering less than half the number of Ajack scopes used . That is not to say a bidder will pay more for an AGA sniper at auction , just to fill the hole in his collection . Also , the Ajack is considered by many to be better than the AGA scopes . Probably the reason that mostly Ajack scopes were upgraded in 1955 & remained in service until 1994 . A few AGA M-44 scoped snipers were retained with the M-41b snipers . A few of them have been posted on this board .

There is no thread that records the AGA sniper serial numbers that I know of . I have collected only a few myself .

Hi there

Ah, the Swede sniper carbine. Turn to page 103 in Dana's book and you'll see some pics. The calibration, as I'm sure you know, was with a trajectory plate on the side of the stock, or in this case a decal. They used two bullets, a 156gr and 139 gr. Tell you what I'll do. I'll clean up that puppy and see what I can do with it. I'll also shoot that m41, that none of you seem to like and see what it'll do.
