My brother just picked up a nice 1944 Sako M39 and would like to know if it's OK to shoot 1986 Russian surplus 147gr ammo through it.He has no idea how to slug the bore and lives 80miles from the nearest gunsmith......oh and the barrel is NOT "D" marked.........thanks in advance.

The surplus ammo I have measured have bullets that are @.3105" diameter. The ammo you mention should be the same. I agree with Bugelson that it should be fine to shoot from your M39.

I have never seen any caution about shooting surplus 7.62x54R ammo from M39 rifles.

BTW: I hand load for 3, M39's and use .312" bullets in all of them.
