Gentlemen,

I have an M1 (SA 02-1944 mfg date) with a new replacement barrel. The barrel is unmarked. It gages fore and aft as unfired.

I recently read an article about an M1A blowing up because of an improperly heat treated barrel, which was also unmarked, in other words no date, no manufacturer, etc.

Please advise: should I find a GI barrel and have a gunsmith install it?

Regard,

unmarked barrel

Have you looked at it with a magnifying glass? It most likely is marked somewhere. Even if the only mark was a "p" I would check the headspace and then shoot it. No one could go to the trouble of making a rifle barrel and then not proof it. If it is already installed on the receiver, go for it! Regards, Bill

found data on barrel

Hi, Thanks for the tip. I used a magnifying glass and found the S - A 6-43 and some other numbers I cannot make out.

Cheers,

Richard

Bland Barrel

It is fortunate that you were able to locate the manufacturing codes on the barrel. There are a lot of very odd and unknown barrels for sale, Always pays to look twice
