When did the Potbelly style stock for the M1 Carbine appear?
Who made them?

My potbelly has the cut-out for the M2 selector switch.
Were all Potbellies made for the M2, or were some made only for the M1.

Feb/March of 1945 were the first early revisions of the M2 including stock changes to the standared M1 stock of which there were 2 variations with the potbelly being the second.

The changes were made to provide necessary clearences For the M2 design.

Pot belly stocks were originally made BY or FOR Inland, since they were the prime M2 maker.
Later, other makers produced stocks for upgrading Carbines to M2 configuration or for rebuild and repair.

Since the pot belly stock was designed expressly for the M2 and M3, all of them should have a selector switch cut on the side.
You see a lot of commercial Carbine stocks in the pot belly form without the switch cut. It can sometimes be difficult to identify these as commercial and not USGI. Also, there were M2 Carbines made by commercial companies like Universal and these have pot belly stocks with the switch cut.
Confusing enough?

Well, you answered my questions pretty well. I recently picked this stock up as there doesn't seem to be a surfeit of original US Carbine wood around anymore. I thought it would be good to have an original spare stock as there seem to be carbines in other wise nice shape for sale in after-market stocks.

So, in other words, this stock would not be correct for an "as manufactured" Inland M1, but would it be "correct" on a re-build when the carbine was up-graded to be fitted with the Type 3 band, adjustable rear sight, etc ?

This one is genuine. (condition is not pristine, but it's all there, and appears all right)
It's missing the front band spring and the buttplate and butt screw. Any good sources for original parts?

M1 carbines made by Inland after jan/feb 45, particularly hand-stamps can be correct in an Inland marked "guppy" style m2 stock. Profile is very distinctive. It will also have the ordnance wheel on the right butt.

Thank you very much for all the info.
My potbelly doesn't have the right-butt Ordnance wheel cartouche, but is "P" marked on the pistol grip.
I was thinking of popping it on my 4/44 dated Inland (round bolt and 6 O'Clock slide, and it has the Type 3 barrel band)
Should a 4-44 era Inland have a push button safety or the toggle safety?
