That was the shooting style up to the 1940s everywhere. Bent elbow and the pistol near your face. The old marksmanship pistol stance comes from pistol dueling. All big bones have to inclined and the arm protects your chest. The only thing that has changed in ISSF sport shooting is the straight arm stance. Two hand combat shooting stance is quite new...Interesting grip style on the second photo, man closest to the camera. Must have exceptionally strong wrist strength to not frequently jam a Luger from holding it that way on the firing line.

well…that’s that. I have just seen very few people take that grip when not in full “teapot” stance, usually illustrated on Swiss postcards and ads for competitive shooting.
