I appreciate the help and info of a few weeks ago since my renewed interest in
Enfields. Now, with more spare time I am getting serious about making a scoped
shooter (no permanent mods) of my #4 Mk1 Longbranch.
Questions:
I saw lots of nice B Squares mounted in some other threads. I gather these are ~$80
or so. For a little more I found a repro mount at Numrich that looked nicer, but the
ad mentions no mounting pads are available. What are these mounting pads?
Any feedback on these mounts?
Next, I saw at APEX some complete stock sets (though mine is matching and the metal
is nice, the wood (particularly the butt) is beat up. The pic looks nice and the price
isn't bad ($35) But then I noticed someone else (SS?) offering new stock parts individually
for not much more. Input on this?
Lastly, APEX also had original cheekrests, but $80 is a bit much for me. Any repros out there?
Anyone got one they can loan for me to copy in my buddy's woodshop?
Any help or input is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Numrich has cheekpieces for about $35 as well as alot of other goodies for your project.

The mount that needs the pads is a repro No4T mount which has to be drilled and tapped .
It will also cost a few $$$ and time to get this system completed.

I have 3 different types of no D/T mounts , all of which hold well.
B-Square , ATI and S&K.

The B-Square may need some (real easy) fitting but you can also use the Mk2 , Mk3 and Mk4 rearsight battle peep and still be able to remove/replace the bolt.
Once fitted , it holds solid...I'm completely confident with this unit.

ATI (no D/T mount)

S&K (no D/T ) This one is on a No5

The mount you saw was for a real No4Mk1T. but it's a copy made in India that needs work.
The mounting pads, screwed to the left side of the reciever. front and rear, are also for a T. Unless you have a rifle with those pads intact, that's not the scope mount for you. Some rifles were built with the pads but NEVER recieved the scopes. (mostly Savage made)
Now there have been on offer No4's from one company that have had the pads badly mounted. They are FAKES. Easy to spot as the pads are held on with PHILLIPS HEAD screws instead of slotted ones. Fitting the proper scope pads to a No4 T is not a home gunsmith project.

I've got an ATI mount that I put on my no4mk1. The only issue that I had with it was an error that I made mounting it, I'm not sure how much of that is my fault and how much of it was the instructions, but if you do get one, I can save you the same mistake: put in the set screw that goes in at 45 degree angle FIRST.

Per the instructions, I had put the screw that goes straight across the mount in first, and when I put in the second screw, and it hit the first screw. I thought that this was the way it was designed, that the 2nd screw was only there to prevent the first screw from backing out (this is the way my ATI mount on the Mosin works, there are 2 screws used to adjust the elevation of the mount, and then a screw that comes in at an angle to lock them).

Actually, it appears that the 45 degree screw catches under the charger bridge, keeping the mount held down tightly, and the screw that goes straight against the reciever is more to hold the mount sligthly away from the reciever so that the gross windage adjustment on the back works.

Once I got it mounted properly, I was rather satisfied with the mount.

Your wood is about as nice as you will find. No.5 wood is scarce.

If you're looking at the pics in this thread, then it's Timberlord's wood that you're...complimenting.

I honestly can't make any determination on the wood, I've seen it advertised on a few sites, but I've not bought a stock set, so I can't comment on whether the wood is in as good a shape as the pics indicate...

Numrich hasn't let me down on anything I've ordered from them, if the buttstock on my No 4 was in poor shape, I wouldn't hesitate to order one from them.

I thought I'd post a few pics of my Longbranch that I'm using for this project and an update.
Here are the pics and you can see the metal has a nice rich finish to it. All matching and in very nice shape with a #2 bolt head. 1942 dated. The fly in the oinment is the stock. While overall serviceable, the butt is ugly (pun intended) and looks more like beech than the darker wood (walnut I presume) elsewhere.
Today I ordered a B Square mount from one source and 40 rds of Prvi .303 from AIM. Working on finding an older scope to mount.
The ammo gives me some hunting ammo and a starting source of reloadable brass.
I have the dies, bullets, etc. to reload and it KILLS me every time I toss away the military berdan primed stuff. AARRRGHHH!!!! Next is some nice wood, which looks like SS advertises new wood for everything but the forearm.
