Went to gun show today saw a short 99 series 9 with mum , bolt sn: does not match, has a grooved safety knob all numbers match on bolt. it is one of the Hoya built Nagoya supervised arsenal. Rifle looks in really good shape. The killer part is the bolt SN: miss matches by one digit. I want to go back today and recheck the receiver number again the receiver looks like the wrong digit is a three and the bolt number shows a two. could some one tell me what it would be worth ? The second arsenal mark looks like a triangle with rounded corners, I threw this info in because I'm not sure of my spelling (Hoya) Thanks! Also the rear barrel band has a sling swivel that is kind of like an early series loop.

It's Howa. They are still in business today making sporting rifles. Non matching rifle it sounds like. You saw a substitute style rifle. Early Howa produced rifles are very desireable.
Could you tell me what a good price would be to pay for it, even though it does not match?

It's hard to give a price sight unseen. Is the stock original?
Looks to be ,has some inspection marks not sanded off, stock could be sanded some hard to tell has a dark smooth finish . Rifle is in very nice shape over all. Would you know what the bolt configurations would be for that rifle? It has the long extractor , and the grooved safety, the bolt handle is barrel shaped . Peep fixed rear sight pinned front barrel band, unguarded front sight, short upper hand guard.

Hope to hear more input on this rifle , gun show is over today ,I would like to thank Big Ed for his input yesterday. I am wondering if I am letting a nice rifle slip by. The seller wants 350.00 for it and that seems high , as the bolt does not match no matter how hard I look! I would like to know what more experienced collectors would pay , or maybe they would steer clear of it. Thank you again for the past input and hopefully more timely advice today .
The later Howas although scarce are not uncommon. So being a non matching rifle for 350.00 I would pass. There is always the remote possibility of finding a matching bolt. I've done it twice. But you'd have to get it much cheaper.IMO
O. K. thanks for the input again! Much cheaper being 200.00 ? I would just like a ballpark number... Thanks for your interest again! By the way I have a 99 with a mismatched bolt that started me down this path, is there a web site to look for bolt matches ? Or did you just comb gun shows?

No website with which I'm familiar, however, at one time the Trader Board of the Japanese Collector's Forum had a bolt listing service. Might want to check there first.

The two that I matched one came from a show. The other I bought off e bay. It was more than a number match. It was correct style, correct proofs, correct arsenal also. You can't tell they were never matching. I'd offer 200 and see what happens. You have nothing to loose.
Thanks for your input, I went back to look at the numbers again still could not will them to match. The secondary arsenal symbol was very lightly stamped but the primary Nagoya mark was very positive ,struck well. Are the markings for Howas always like that, just for future information for me. I'm not sure he would have come down that far in price but I will never know as I did not pursue it. I did buy a T- 30 bayonet from him though!

Yes the Howa logos are struck much lighter than the Nagoya logo, the example you saw sounds typical. Jon
Thanks good to know for next time.

Another Howa only trait. The used rather large numbers to stamp the serial number. Larger than regular Nagoya built rifles.
Thanks for taking the time to send the pictures ! Very low number rifles I noticed the small recoil bolt too. The one I looked at had the large round one, I think it was in the 67 K range. Thank you both for the extra skinny.
