This is a 98 Mauser action that has a Remington Barrel screwed into it. The caliber is 308 Winchester, and yes buba definitely had a field day with the front sight long before I got it. I paid 169.00 for it and it's been used to kill 2 deer, 1 by my dad and 1 by myself. The one dad killed though is a funny story for another day. Didn't know where exactly to post this, so here it is.

This is a good example of "recycling" by a local gunsmith. Mausers are perhaps the easiest actions to fit another barrel onto. At one time, as late as about 1980, you could still buy 03A3 barrels as surplus from the DCM (now the CMP). Cost was less than $2.00 including shipping. The 'smith then cut off the 1903 threaded portion of the barrel, rethreaded to Mauser, and rechambered to .308. It worked like a champ, was inexpensive and shot as well as any commercially made barrel. It also worked very well for old timers like the .30-40 Krag. I've had several and this is what you have. Regards.

Amazing to me - if it is not original - everyone has a bad comment - but when it is time to pay the price of an original - well, it gets even more interesting.

Shoot what you have and be happy you have it. If you want to start a museum, so be it - make sure your kids and grandkids know this before they spend your investment on a world cruise...LOL
