Hello: I'm new to this forum and my question is quick - I have an original K98 Mauser marked byf 1942 on the receiver. I believe it is a "russian capture" but it has locking screws, front sight hood, but no cleaning rod. All the numbers do not match.

Could someone please tell me what length cleaning rod would be correct and where I could obtain one? I'd be happy to obtain a "replica" and also a sling.

Thanks,

Insert a stiff wire or rod into the cleaning rod hole and measure the distance from the bottom of the hole to the center of the front sight band. That will be close enough to tell you if you need a 10 inch or 12.5 inch rod.

I recently bought one of each size repro cleaning rod from landser_company on Ebay for $8.99 each. They won't pass for originals but are fine for the RC rifles I put them in. I bought them to replace two repro rods with heads too big to fit into a bayonet.

http://www.mountainstatesupply.com/slings/german-k98-yugo-m48-leather-sling.html has decent repro slings for $17.95.

geladen is right on and iti's important to measure if the stock has been changed. I read somewhere where later
K98s took the longer rod. I have a bnz 45 which is not in the original stock (otherwise it wouldn't have a hole for
the rod) and a German K98 reworked by the Yugos. The bnz takes the long one and the Yugo takes the short
one. 43 is still visible under the Yugo crest so I'm assuming it was made in 1943 and the article I read said they
went to the longer rod around 1940.

A byf 42 stock does take a 12.5" rod. But you have a byf 42 receiver. You don't know what kind of stock you have.
