Well, it finally showed up. Almost three weeks after I ordered it and it being overdue by UPS for 6 days. Here she is, the final piece of the swiss collection, my K31. I paid extra for a handpick but I dont think I really got that. The pics will explain why.

You can buy a good one on Gunbroker from a couple of dealers that are unloading lots of them. My K-31 was $335, tiger-striped stock and made in 1934. Great condition for being 80 years old. Most on Gunbroker are selling for about $350

They dont have anymore in stock. So i'd pretty much have to return it and play the waiting game, or try and get a refund and apply that towards a k31 from simpsons. This is the only time I havent been fully satisfied with a gun from classic.

Ouch, I had 3 purchases from classic many years ago, 2 out of 3 I had to return/exchange, it looks like it's still business as usual. Simpson is the way to go for a decent K31, plenty to select, they provide detailed descriptions/pictures for each gun, you know what you are getting, no surprise or disappointment like this.

I would contact Classic and ask for a return and full refund to include shipping. They should not have shipped that rifle with so obvious a crack, someone had to see it during packaging.
Otherwise, you are going to invest at lease another $50.00+ to return this rifle and pay shipping to Simpsons for another.
With that said on K31's the determining factor is the bore condition, stocks can be fixed or replaced (Boyds), replacement of the barrel is problematic.

I don't see a real problem with that rifle, it has a nice walnut stock and overall look is ok, these were used rifles and the damages are due to transport and easy to fix.

I would maybe agree under other circumstances. But buyer paid a premium for HANDpicked. This should have never passed a handpick inspection, and have been shipped in said condition if it was truly handpicked.

If you haven't done so already, suggest you disassemble the rifle and explore the depth and extent of the crack.
There is a lot of "meat" in that area stock, so if the crack is not extensive it may be fixed with a quality wood glue and a screw or two.
Given the other cosmetic stock damage on this rifle a stock refinish project would not be out of the question.

The crack could have happened during transit and would not have been there when the rifle was "hand picked". It does look like a new crack in the photo. I don't know what you paid for it but the crack appears to be repairable if the rest of the rifle is in good shape. A little Acraglass and a clamp should do the trick.

Over on the mother-forum - swissrifles.com - a few years back, we had one poster whose K31 - shipped to him by FEDUPS - was broken right across the wrist in two clear pieces. IIRC it was fixed properly and to the satisfaction of the owner by pinning and gluing.

NO! Do not disassemble the rifle. Contact Classic Firearms first, and make whatever arrangements you can for replacement or refund, in full, including shipping both ways. If you disassemble the rifle it is yours. You may also want to send photos by e-mail, mention you are a Gunboards member, and that you are reporting this.

Contact Classic and send it back. Please keep us updated as to the response. I had an earlier transaction with Classic that was completely frustrating (service related, nothing to do with the firearm), but they have since seemed to greatly improved the customer service so I gave them another chance and my recent transactions have been fine. However, having said this, I recently purchased a 1911 from the same batch and was somewhat underwhelmed with the "handpick" option. Yes, I understand that an online purchase does have some risk and it was my decision so I accepted the risk. I am going to keep the 1911, however when I go to add another Swiss rifle I will go another route. That being said, if my 1911 had a crack similar to yours it would have went back the next day.
How was the packaging? Was the box bent? Mine was very well wrapped with bubble wrap so I cannot fault their packaging SOP. Classic does package very well (much better than Century).
Regardless, please let us know if you decide to return the rifle and how that goes.
Cheers

Ok so it may of been fine before shipment.. but its damaged in shipment it needs to be returned. It is not the buyers fault, its the shipping dept/ and or the carrier fault. Contact classic, they can send you a return label and get UPS or whoever to credit thier account because of the damage in transit.

Regardless.. it is not the buyers fault. This was not priced as a cracked/damaged rifle.. so why should the buyer have to work on it as a gunsmith special?!

On a side note, the folks saying to fix it etc.. thats ok - but i doubt anyone of you would pay the same price the OP did for a damaged rifle if it was up on the trader right now.
