Also, what ammo should I used in the carbine? Will M2 ball for the Garand work or do I need rimmed brass?

Standard GI 30-06 Ball (or commercial -06) will work fine, though not anything loaded hotter than GI (no _+P). Rimmed ammo NOT required. Nott aht you are going to find 30-06R...

Okay thanks. That was what I thought but the other one I have in 30-40 Krag the rounds are rimmed so I wanted to make sure.

Yes, the 30-40 Krag was rimmed (well, still is), but one of the things they copied from Mauser when the '03 was being developed was the rimless round. Copied the Mauser standard head size, too.

I would say my 70 years of observation suggests your dad was right. I try to do that, don't always succeed, but I'm always ready.
