It was sold locally by a guy who just offered it after another transaction. He was asking $500 and I was glad to take it. I believe it is dated 1921 from the serial date. It is photographed with my 1895 in .30-40 Krag dated 1913.

Is the stock correct the way it is or is it supposed to have a top part on the for end stock? The buttstock does have the little door for a cleaning kit.

My 30-40 krag 1895 is missing the upper forend stock. You can see the inletting for the band clip which snaps over the barrel. Frank

Went through the Maryland Arms Collector Show last weekend, not a single 1895 in .30-06 to be had for under two grand, and most were over three.

Well under. Thank you. That is what I was thinking looking at the prices out there.

I'm going to take a look at it on Thursday. He is going to look at my Beretta M34 pistol and we will probably do a trade. Here are some more pics from the seller.

So met up with the guy earlier today. I decided to go for it. I almost hate to say what I got it for. $500. I believe it is dated 1921 from the serial number. Here are some pictures of the carbine with my 1913 dated rifle.

Great Snag. I have a 1920s 1895 in .30 army. Its amazing what these looked like in their prime. I do not think any companies make a modern repo of them. Its a pitty; they have a very interesting and attractive profile and action.

I agree. I have always viewed the 1895 as the most attractive lever action and my personal favorite. I had wanted one since I was a kid and my dad got me my first lever action Wincester, in 22 cal.

Is that zebra thing a tablecloth or sheet?

It does look really nice, I am curious if the buttplate has the trapdoor like the Russian-contract rifles or not. My modest theory is that Winchester used a lot of the Russian contract parts on later guns.

It does in fact have the buttplate trapdoor. I will post some pics of it.

It is a tablecloth. I live with my girlfriend.

If you are taking requests for photos, how about the rear sight from the top and that stock area? I want to see if it began life as a musket.

The more I look at it, the more I am convinced it began life as a musket.

* Musket buttplate
* Musket rear band
* cutouts in stock for handguard springs
* hole in barrel for the original rear sight (the other hole is either hidden by the rear sight or went where the dovetail was)

One more quick check--does it have a rear sling swivel base or does it look like it used to have one?

The other things to check that would involve some disassembly would be to look for that second rear sight hole, and remove the forestock to see if it has a T-shaped lug.

I still have a "needs fitting" forestock I would be willing to send you. Also, if you want to know what a restoration would look like, check out this thread:

Just a heads-up, its not so much a "needs fitting" forestock as it is a hunk of walnut vaguely shaped like a Winchester 1895 forestock. My brother-in-law stated once he was done fitting mine, that he might have been better off starting with a stock blank. That being said, I would feel guilty asking for money, just cover my postage.

Whats starting to throw me now is that Winchester also made a version that looks like your stock length but otherwise has musket parts

Standard GI 30-06 Ball (or commercial -06) will work fine, though not anything loaded hotter than GI (no _+P). Rimmed ammo NOT required. Nott aht you are going to find 30-06R...

Yes, the 30-40 Krag was rimmed (well, still is), but one of the things they copied from Mauser when the '03 was being developed was the rimless round. Copied the Mauser standard head size, too.

I would say my 70 years of observation suggests your dad was right. I try to do that, don't always succeed, but I'm always ready.
