I would like to share a few post cards I was given during my recent trip to Germany, we attended a wedding near Bonn, and the Mother of the Bride gave me a book of photos that her mother-in-law had saved from her brothers, cousins and friends.

This is the photo of Josef Siebertz from the Ehrentafel of Brenig-Dersdorf-Bisdorf.

This is the first card I have of Josef's. He seems to be happy to have become a driver, as it will make his life easier.

He should be the one sitting in the seat, not the one sitting on the tounge, as he is a Fahrer. He has spelled Cousin "Cosin" on all the cards I have of his (4) I am not sure what he means by Fellung, I thought I must have made a mistake and it should be Festung, but it is definitely not Festung. Fellung was changed to Stellung, as that is correct, thanks to Robert on Pickelhaubes.com for the good catch on my mistake. He uses some abreviations, Gsd should be Gott sie dankt, and I think dkb is dankbar.

I also have a few cards from his brother(?) Heinrich that I will post later, My ability to read script is not real good, and I hope that anyone who can find error in my transcriptions will post their take onthe writing. As can be seen by most of the text, it is of little real value, but there is a little history there.

My dearest!
I have arrived well in Trier, and have immediately been assigned to the M.G. company. I have as you (erhielt?) see been assigned to the drivers. Because of that I have a lot lesser tempo. Otherwise I'm absolutely fine, my training will because of that be severely delayed. In any way within three weeks I will go to the smithy. I wish you all that you will live well and greet you heartfelt. Your nephew Josef.
This is as far as I get tonight. More tomorrow. :)

I've edited the text as per your comments, Gus.
Hi BC,
Here is the word in Question.

I am sure that he wrote erheht. Note there is a period after this word (I forgot to add it to the text) I take this to be ehrheit, or something to that effect, but I have to admit that I am guessing. I feel pretty good to had deduced G.s.d. is Gott sie dankt, and dkb, dakb are dankbar.
Like you, I have the honor of becoming a driver.

Perhaps, We need to remember that people misspelled words and may have used the wrong word too. Nothing has really changed, although with a word processor, we can make mistakes at a much faster rate.

Hey Bayonet Collector,
I found another mistake, Schniede is wrong, it is actually Schmiede, or forge, or smithy.

It really helps to have another brain working on this, thank you

You are quite correct Gus. As we've seen during the many translated cards and letters the level of litteracy varies greatly. I suppose social standing (I.E. how long schooling you got and the quality of it.) has meant a lot...

It really helps to have another brain working on this, thank you
Gus
That is the strenght of this forum and what has made the translation projects possible. I'm sure that as soon as Big Commander gets his PC online again the things we struggle with will be answered, also if the expert looks in again (when time permits, he is busy these days) things will be much clearer.

I will get on to the next translation within a few hours. I love this hobby. :)
I had wondered where Big Commander was:)
His PC has crashed. Last I heard from him (SMS as he could not get online) he was not sure whether it could be fixed or whether he would have to get a new one. He will probably be back online in a while. Well, that sort of thing happens now and then....

My dears
Thank you for your dear (lb.=liebe I think) parcels and cards, and hope you are all fine, which I can say about myself. For us the great happenings are past we lie in position. What does Heim do now? Here we heard about a great clash in the west. Still all is well here we will master the Russians as our M.G. does its work. Greetings to you all heartfelt. Your thankful nephew and cousin Josef.

With this I send you a picture of our position as we build them here in the east. I am still healthy and happy, thank God. Which I hope you all are and hope that we will see each other soon again. Your thankful nephew and cousin Josef.

My dears
I joyfully recieved your parcels, please recieve my best thanks. THe best from me too, do tell more as well. A pleasure to hear from you too, as I greet all of you heartfelt your thankful nephew and cousin Josef.
(I'm not totally sure about all the sentences here, especially not "Komm von mir auch das Beste Wohl berichten welches zum. Freude von Euch ja
auf hörte," Any ideas will be welcome! Bayonetcollector.)

Now, next is mr Göbbels...
The text you have questions about is:
"Bin wie Ihr erseht zu den Fahrer gekommen." Became, as you can see, a (the) driver.

"Schmiede" is correct = forge. "Stellung" is also correct.

Indeed my PC died from this warmth virus and will be replaced tomorrow. Everything was done by real specialists to save him but he fell in the line of duty. Everything was done to hear the name of his murderer from his lips but he was too far gone. W'll be "bäck"!
So, though not finding the right word I got the sense of it and translated correctly. A hunch can go a long way...

I hope your next PC will be innoculated against that sort of virus....

Welcome back, my friend!
This is great, I am amazed that I am able to do as well as I am, I am lucky in that all these boys had the same teacher, and their script is very similar.

I'm back in business! Show me your "Fraktur/Sutterlin" problems :D.
Not that I'm perfect but ... tenacious concerning impossible writings.
Woo Hoo, I am back, my absence was caued by a combination of my own stupidity and the internet provider's **** spam blocker. I did not recieve my confirmation email after I changed my email address on the forum, I have to admit that I have not prepaired any more cards, as I spent the past couple of days putting a new engine in one of my trucks. I will try to get another soldier's cards posted int he nex day.
Best wishes
Gsu
