I am working on a short book which will cover Japanese-used imported weapons from the approx. period of 1850-1900. The research is proving a LOT more interesting than I even imagined. I have learned that several Winchester weapons were in use by the Japanese during this period. I understand that some Henry rifles were at least tested and that Models 1866 and 1873 were purchased and issued. Can any of you collectors help me with the background or particularly with detail on examples of these weapons which may have survived? In exchange I can help you with translations of the Japanese markings.

The Japanese also purchased and used 500 Winchester Model 1883 Hotchkiss bolt-action tubular magazine rifles, but I have that subject pretty well covered. However, I would like to hear from anyone who has an example. I am aware on only one in the U.S. at present and I have some photos of that one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Spencer

First My error,I do not know why I said 1865 ,other than I have 26 Spencers , have collected them sence 1967 . It is a N.M. (New Model which is the 1868 model known to collectors as the last model). It is a late one by the ser. number. Civil war 1860 and later 1865 models are the easy ones to find. The 1867 and 1868 ones took me many years and this one was just bought last year.I payed $125 for my first Spencer in 1967 ,it was a 1865 carbine. WOW ! Here are some photos I will also send you.
