Probably is a still from a film,I thinks its been colored. The soldiers at the bottom of the pic supporting the log, have no color at all

I remember seeing a photo similar to that taken by a Japanese journalist embedded with troops on Guadacanal. The photo was of several soldiers crossing a stream on a makeshift bridge.

The chances of the fellow surviving are pretty slim I suppose. It fascinates me that he has been immortalized for a single second of his life.

That is indeed a still taken from motion picture footage. There is a similar one at a wider angle that shows more detail of the engineers up to their necks in water acting as human pilings for the foot bridge.
