Is this a training rifle? The barrel is rifled, and the person I bought it from told he has fired it , and it fires well…….is this a military training rifle intended to be used for firing? Any help with markings would be be really helpful…..thanks in advance

No. It is a Type 38 variation made in China. The correct Chinese designation for these rifles is not known. Collectors refer to them as “Six/Five Infantry Rifles” based upon the four Chinese characters (六 五 歩 槍) that appear on the breech top of all examples. Some examples have two more characters (晋造 - JÌN-ZẦO), located either side and above of the receiver’s six (六) character, translate to “Shansi” and “Made” (read right to left). They were manufactured at the Taiyuan Arsenal, Taiyuan, Shansi Province, Republic of China (太原軍械庫, 山西) in 1929/1930.
Many of these rifles came in from Red China in the 1970s/1980s, but have dried up and are hard to find. Yours looks like a nice example,

Chinese made type 38 copy. Relatively rare these days compared to the Japanese ones.
Many thanks for the replies,I assume these are chambered in Japanese 6.5?,The person I purchased it from said he had owned the rifle for about 40 years so that would line up with them being surplused in eighties

It is probably still in the Japanese 6.5x50SR. However, just to cover all possible bases, some were converted to 7.62x39 by the Red Chinese when they were transferred to the PRC's militia. It would be obvious from the bore size and by modifications to the magazine and follower.
I wish my Chinese was better. I'd love to know what the stock stamps indicate. Seems to be one over another and the initial stamp seems to be "People's Militia".

I went through my Japanese Type 30 bayonets, and found this one. It is Arsenal unmarked with no serial number on the pummel. There is some type of character carved in to the handle. Could this be a Chinese made type 30? Fits the above rifle perfectly. Any thoughts? Much appreciated, and Ty in advance
