I am using 348 Win brass that has been trimmed and formed with a 10.4x47R FL size die. 8mm Lebel brass also works. I use bullets from a dedicated heeled mold by RCBS which is no longer made. Slug your bore; you may be able to use 44 caliber bullets. I've not done that but a fellow forum member has and may post directions. It keys on bore diameter, though. SW

Bought one with a pristine bore that is begging me to shoot.It was sporterized years ago and some of the wood enlays where the rear swivel was and cleaning rod show old wood inlayed,posibly from the same stock.Found out that 348 Winchester was not the only cartridge that can be used to form brass.Was wondering if anyone here has formed and shot a 1890 Model Italian Vetterli Vitali and need a little help as far as bullet mould and forming of the brass,I will work up loads carefully Cartridges of the World states it is somewhat in the Swiss Vetterli or better as far as power.It cleaned up verry nice with fine steelwool and has a verry good finish also,I will post pics later just want to know if anyone is shooting one of these old rifles and how to form brass for now and will post pics later.Thanks Dakoma

I anneal 8X50 Lebel cases and load with 10 grs. Bullseye with a 1/4 sheet TP over the powder, fill the case with cornmeal, grits, cream of wheat, etc and cap with a wad of bread and fire form the cases. As mentioned you will have to slug your bore to determine what size bullet will work. I use a gas checked 310 gr. 44 mag bullet cast from the Lee mould.

So you fire form and trim ,then you just necksize and seat your bullet?RCBS the only one who makes a die set for these rifles ?I plan to use the 8mm Lebel brass.I found some info on the Swiss Vetterli (I have one also still rimfire)where brass was run in a 44 Mag.die to form and then by some other means a bullet was seated all done without the expence of a RCBS $250.00 die set.Thank you for the information,I will slug my bore and order some 8mm Lebel brass,I dont have a 44cal mould right now.What about paperpatching a bullet some of the old cartridges used them.On cast boolits forum they have info for paperpatching with good results even in modern firearms.
