Is this Ammo safe to shoot in an old Broomhandle?.I scoured local shops and this all that was available.I've heard about some Ammo being too hot for the old girls and I was told Fiocchi was ok,but no one had any.
The Broomhandle is an M30,matching,but worn. The muzzle swallows a round (so much that I thought the pistol was 9mm)but a look at the bore shows that there is still distinct rifleing, so how bad could it be shot out? Is this common with Broomhandles?
Thanks!

A lot of the broomhandles I have seen have been in bad condition with shot out bores. You have to remember that these guns were used prior to WW2 and many of them have seen hard use before they were imported into the US. The proper ammo for these guns should be 30 mauser which is a bottleneck cartidge similar to the russian 7,62x25. But the ruskie stuff will be to hot for the bolo. 9MM bolos normally had red nines carved into the grips and were newer than the 30 mauser guns.
Did you try to post a pic of some ammo because no pics came thru.

Dont think I would fire this in a Broomhandle.7.62x25 is very similar, but normally loaded much hotter than 30mauser.The last China made ammo I fired in my CZ52 was very hot-it punched thru the oak tree we were using for a backstop like paper.

This Norinco is probably about 1700-1800 fps (out of my 10" PPSh barrel). Most likely 1600 fps out of a Broomhandle. Way too hot to try in your Mauser. If you haven't replaced the springs, you don't want to shoot it until you get some new Wolf springs. Then maybe I would try Sellier & Beloit, which is not quite as hot as the Norinco. S&B is brass cased, non-corrosive and reloadable. I've been reloading 110 gr Speer RN SoftPoint with 5.5grs VihtaVuori N340. About 980-1050 fps, a wimpy load, but it ejects and functions good and puts less strain on my Bolo.

Do not shoot the 7.62x25 at all in the Broomhandle.

You can run your car at redline RPM but would you really want to?

C96 Ammo etc

Hi, Regarding Tok ammo, 30 Luger etc; do not use these in a C96. Propoer ammo is available from vendors like Graf and Midway. Before firing one of these old timers, it is best to change out the three coil springs that help dampem the recoil or help prevent the firing pin from possibly protruding upon return to battery. They run 12-20 bucks per set. Wolf, SARCO probably, Numrich usually; Ebay, Manions, Gunbroker etc sometimes. Check bolt stop area to make sure there has been no previous damage. Visit the C96 Forum-oodles of info! Good luck, Ray

Wolff makes a good spring set for the C96. Also, very important to check your bolt stop for cracks/damage (this is the little piece that keeps the bolt from sticking in your face). If the rifling is bad for $130.00 Redmans Rifling and Reboring can install a new rifled sleeve in your barrel. I'm sure that many many Broom's were fired with 7.62 Tokarev ammo and nothing happened, but it ain't worth the risk-especially through a C96 that probably came out of China.

Thanks for all the replies!!! I'm on the hunt now for some .30 ammo for it but nothing showed up on GB or AA.Can I order from Midway direct? Also, should the muzzle swallow a 7.62X25 round as I described? I mean jeez, it takes it up to the bottleneck and could probably go further. There is distinct rifling in the barrel though. A 9mm round is a very tight fit,but almost seems like a better fit.Did they make the M-30's in 9mm? the rounds seat about the same in the chamber so that's not really a good indicator.
As far as coming out of China,There are no import marks but the magwell has the 3 Chinese figures described on the C-96 website. Also, the numbers match,is this more the exception or the rule?
Thanks!

GFL,
I have a old C30 broom that was converted years before I got it to 9mm. Had the barrel relined after it blew up in my face on the 39th shot with mild loads. As stated above, CHECK THE SLIDE STOP! This design is over 110 years old and all that keeps a quarter pound of steel fom hitting you in the face at high speed is a little "L" shaped piece on the upper right slide extension. If it's old and brittle you might not see the crack in the inside angle until it lets go. Get it replaced when you reline the bore, it's only a couple bucks more. Took me a while to get over the blow, and I lost a good pair of regular glasses as well as the over the frame safety glasses. Without double protection, I might have lost the eye. Mentor Arms did my restoration work and did a great job. Oh, the range owner wanted to know If I used his ammo and if I was going to sue him before he would give me a band aid and let me clean up in his bathroom.

This subject has been covered several times before. Tok ammo will feed and fire in a C96. Many shooters swear that they have shot this ammo in their C96's and nothing has hapenned. Tok ammo is way too hot and will eventually blow up your gun, not to mention what will happen to your face and hand! You can reload your own Mauser ammo and make it more affordable. Get a couple of boxes from Midway and reuse the brass for reloading. Get a set of Wolff springs and replace those tired springs. Also make sure that the bolt stop area is in good condition with no cracks or deformities.

many years ago i bought a nice old broom from from clark bros. in warrenton va..they had a range right out back so i went to try it out..about the 5th shot i dropped the hammer and it went"click" i thought ok a misfire..ill wait a few to hand cycle the bad round,as i was waiting i looked and noticed the hammer was GONE! i looked around and found the broken bit on the ground,,a fellow walked over and asked to see what type ammo i was useing,it was a box of interarms 7.62x25(mind you this was YEARS ago),and he informed me that it was way to hot..duh!..i wnet back inside and talked to the guys there they silver solderd the hammer back to gether and also orderd a replacement for me at no charge, since that time im very very careful as to what i shoot in my brooms, coles has some fnm that ive found to be very good stuff, brass cased reloadable,i also noted that someone above said something about a brommhandle forum is that on this board?id like to check it out if someone can tell me where its at?and also who is mentor arms?
they do broom work?

Again, This subject has been covered before. Any of the factory load or mil surplus 7.62X25 ammo is too hot for the C96 design guns. I also include any of the Spanish clones/variations and absolutely the Chinese copies out of caution. I would suggest a full set of Wolff springs and a very careful inspection of the bolt stop, the bolt stop slot in the barrel extension, and the bolt stop slot ends in the bolt. If possible get a dye penetrant, magnetic particle (Magnaflux), or x-ray inspection on these parts. I have seen all three fractured at various times and it is not pretty. I would also loading your ammo own very carefully keeping it on the light side. Brass is available relatively cheaply from Starline and of excellent quality, Hornandy produces great bullets for this particularly their XTP round, people have also used the short jacketed 100 grain and various hard cast bullets with good results. Redmanns does a very good job of re-lining barrels, they have done three C96s for me plus several other types, make them your first choice if needed.

I have some C96s and Astras iin my collection and they are great fun to shoot but must be respected for their limitations and age.
