So I'm finally catching on here. Reading everyone's posts and whatnot. I began digging into my rifles and low and behold found this in my 1944 Izhevsk.

So is my Mosin an ex-sniper? And what does that mean exactly?

Appreciate everything. ;)

Usually these 44s that have been desnipered have really nice bores, picked up one last fall was a electro pencil matching special so nobody wanted it, what appealed to me was that the patch job on the holes was very crude, my friend was able to remove the plugs without damaging the original threads, now it's back in original configuration, scope and all, and shoots really well.

Told you so! I was surprised in youor original post that you said there were no plugged holes!
Your rifle is in the middle of a known block of snipers. My experience is that its more common for a 1944 91/30 to be a sniper than not.
Congratulations!

This is what I'm thinking of doing with my 44. Would love to hunt with it, how much would this cost?

Mark,

Being new to collecting I thought the plugs were on the outside! Thanks for the heads up.

The bore is in very good shape and hope to fire her next weekend.

eneat,
Your story is exactly how I got started in Mosin collecting, picked up a 1944 Izhevsk that turned out to be an ex-
sniper, haven't looked back. I hope your experience is as good as mine!
