Today, I stopped at a local gun shop that carries a fair number of milsurps and "assault weapons" - M1's, M14's, AR's, AK's, etc. They still had a handful of AR's, several WASR's, a STG-2000, a Galil Golani .223 sporter, and something I've been looking for for a while - an AES-10B. I grabbed this last rifle right away, and looked it over. Typical Romanian RPK with welded muzzle nut and cheesy bipod, but it also had the adjustable windage and AK side rail. Looked to be in VG+ condition, and I was getting more excited on the inside as I checked it over. Unfortunately, I made a cardinal mistake - I didn't think to look at the price tag till last.
$699.95
I couldn't believe it, so I got the attention of a store employee. Here's the following dialogue:
"Hi, is this your best price on this rifle?" [
holding up RPK, flashing a winning smile]
"What's it say on the price tag?"
"It says 699.95. If I paid cash, could you go lower?"
"The price tag is what it is. No difference paying cash or credit."
"Oh ok - well, thanks anyway." [
reluctantly replacing RPK on rack]
I looked at the price on a WASR-10: $699.95. Price tag on the Galil: $699.95. Suspecting a trend, I examined the tag on the STG-2000 - no, it's not what I expected: $999.95!
The sad thing is, some people will pay those prices without blinking. Ah well, my search for an AES-10B goes on.
