I have a feeling we are missing the the whole picture. Who is behind the rifle?
Also could it be a top mount? I keep looking at my period side mounts and this is still to high I think, hard to tell even with the scope diameter change.

OK, blew it up and looked at it closer. Yes, PE scope. WAAAAY too far forward to be in the traditional German side mount location.

That mount appears to be a SSR. There are numberous pictures of Soviet scopes in use on German scoped rifles. I am not sure that this picture is one of them.
