Have a 1899 Tula Instructie M91. Interesting rifle in that the bbl shank original serial is lined out and a new serial number has been added. The bolt and buttplate both match the new serial number, too.

What's neat is that there is a и mark (about 1/4" tall) on the top of the receiver by the pinged eagle. Could this be a surrogate letter for "I", short for Instructie? (But why use a cyrillic letter for this?)

Anyone ever see the letter и marked on the receiver like this?

a picture might help...

I'm not sure, but it appears as though the letter may have been stamped before the eagle was defaced.
