I've been looking for a copy of 'The Japanese Type 99 Arisaka Rifle' by Voigt, but they all appear to be sold out or out of print.

I also checked out most of the rifle book links on the post 'Links to sites of interest, like Banzai; where to buy Books', but those too seem to be dead links.

I recently acquired a Type 99 Series 31, but don't know much about it. I'd love to find a book like the Vicker's Guides on Arisakas.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I had the same problem until a member offered to sell me his soft cover copy as he snagged one of the recent 100 hard cover prints that sold out in a few days about 6 months ago.

I imagine someone here has a duplicate copy they’ll let go to a good home.

BTW, Let me be the first to welcome you to gun boards...lots of wisdom here so ask away. Just remember to read the forum rules and post pictures!

Thank you for the warm welcome! My wife purchased the Type 99, then gifted it to me. She doesn't know a lot about guns, so was a bit nervous with the purchase (i.e. not being ripped off). The mum and all the markings are in great condition and all painted so she was worried it might have been a fake...? I'll post pictures after Christmas. Thanks again!

Welcome to the forums!

If she's concerned, no worries. I'm sure that it's 'painted' to highlight the mum, SN, and manufacturer. I have a few rifles that are like that too because the sellers wanted to have the markings pop up visibly.

Based on the basic info you provided so far, it sounds like you have a Toyo Kogyo (Series 31) Type 99. When you have a chance, could you check the SN on the bolt and other parts you have to see if it lines up the last 2-3 digits of your Rifle's Receiver? Usually it will indicate it's a matching with your receiver. (ie: Bolt body No. 123 and Receiver ending with no. 123)

Looking forward to photos of the rifle!

Here are some quick photos I was able to take. Let me know if I should take more/different ones. And, yes, it's a matching parts rifle except for the dust cover. I'm also missing a bayonet and sling.

Your wife is definitely a keeper.....and so is the rifle. She has a good eye for condition.
Purchase a copy of Fred Honeycutt's "Military Rifles of Japan". It has all the basic information you will need. Fred is responsible for many of us having the addiction to this hobby that we do.

My T-99 is the same as yours, [S-No,8000] except mine looks like it got dragged through every Island in the Pacific theatre & yours looks like it was on guard duty in an office for the duration of the war! :p

Well I got my rifle back from a local gunsmith. This guy verified it isn't a fake, it wasn't stolen, and is the best Type 99 he ever saw in 30 years of gunsmithing so I'm happy! Yeay!
