I recently purchased a lee enfield and do not know much about the history of the rifle or how to ID it or what the markings mean. I purchased it just to have a piece of history and the reputation of being a great rifle. And help with ID'ng my rifle and it's markings would be appreciated. Also are there any good books or websites to find more on the history of this rifle.

A good 1st Enfield, quite a 'catch' with only 3200 manufactured that year.

Import mark shows it was bought into the USA pre 1968

Does the number on the bolt match the action and other numbers ?

No 1 Mk III. In my last pic I see the VIII is that the marking.

It is Marked as :

SMLE MKIII
Which is a :

Short
Magazine
Lee
Enfield
MkIII (Mk3)

It was also known as the No1 rifle MkIII.

The No1 MkIII* (note the star) ws also manufactured, it was similar to the MkIII but was simplified to aid manufacture.
