SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — An Illinois House committee approved legislation Wednesday that would require a statewide registration for handguns and place a tax on ammunition, despite opposition from gun-rights advocates.

Both bills — touted as tools for improving the state's response to gun violence— passed 7-4 and now go to the House floor.

The registration bill would impose a $20 fee for each handgun a person owns. The registration certificates, which owners would have to carry when in possession of a weapon, would expire every five years. Lost or stolen handguns would have to be reported to police.

Handgun registration is clearly unconstitutional and the ammo tax would penalize all IL gun owners for the violence perpetrated by criminals. Of course we all know where the REAL criminals reside in Illinois...

If the bill was ever passed and signed they would not have to as doing so could violate their 5th amendment rights against self-incrimination. Aren't those anti-freedom bills great?

Y'all come north ... come to Wisconsin. Maybe not the most gun friendly state in the Union ... but compared to Illinois and some others not to be named ... it's Heaven. Depending on how far north you go, the weather isn't all that different. Just a thought and I do feel for you guys!

If it makes you feel better, our famous mayor of Philadelphia does the same thing. For some reason the lawmakers there think the entire state is responsible for their ineptitude and inability to thwart crime inside the city limits. Fotunately we have some (dare I say) level headed people in Harrisburg who vote Phillly's measures down because 9 times out of 10, the philly council people try to get around the state constitution.

Same problem here in California with the legislators from Los Angeles implementing thier anti-gun stance on the entire state due to LA's "social" issues.
However, how do you propose to vote out a legislator in a city 600+ miles (my example) from where you live?
The city of LA far outnumbers where I live and the surrounding counties by a factor of 12.
