If it is too short for a M44 I would try to take it back and exchange it for a longer one. If you can't even clean a carbine with it is is useless.
Use a pull through, and use the rod to clean the chamber?

Gosh, what size Dewey rod did you buy? I always add the length of the receiver to the length of the barrel to determine the minimum length rod to purchase.
You did that, right?
You can buy the nice long parker hale style cleaning jags for your Dewey rod, and that will give you some extra length, unless of course that's what you have already.
Your other option is to clean your M44 from the muzzle, using a rod guide to protect the muzzle from damage. While not ideal, you'll probably be just fine with this approach.
What happens when you get a 91/30 or a 91? Go to Brownells and get the long .30 cal Dewey rod--a 40" one, then you're all set.
Take or send it back

and order a Tipton Carbon Fiber 1 piece rod from www.midwayusa.com. The one that I use is the Cal. 27-45, 40" long. Item Number 164-517, $33.49. This is the best cleaning rod I have ever used. They also have Nickel Plated cleaning Jags. Good stuff! Bob

+1 for the Tipton.
I just got one of those Tipton rods about a month ago and it beats all the broken Deweys I have all to death. They have improved them from the first one I got because it was too bendable and I took it back. I love this sucker but the test will be to see how long it lasts! Bill
I have a nice Dewey. Its made out of Unobtainium. Denny
Did you buy a pistol rod?

I like Pro-Shot steel rods. Most of the decent gun stores and several of the gun show dealers around here carry them. You can also buy direct from them for about the same price as retail. They don't have a shopping cart on their site, but you can browse it and then call them to place an order. They've always been very helpful on the phone and even pointed out that if I added $5 (to get to $75) to my first order I would get free shipping. www.proshotproducts.com
I got a couple of Dewey's at a gun show about 10 years ago. I love them and they still work great.
After breaking an aluminum rod, I had my wife buy me a Nylon coated Dewey. Great cleaning rod, and is long enough for all my rifles.
I can actually get the end of a patch to peek through the end of the barrel; it's just a matter of it going that final half inch.
I don't see what your problem is, you are making more of it then what it is.......just clean it from the muzzle end to the chamber end, if you have a rod that is coated you aren't going to damage the muzzle.
