At 16, on the way home frm high school I stopped in a gun store and purchased an Enfield pistol ($5) and walked (about 4 miles) home thru town carrying it in my hand.

(My first weapon was won at a school festival (on school grounds). I was 15 and had a choice of a single shot 22 pistol or a single shot 22 rifle. I took the rifle.)

Different today. Many more restrictions. Actually seems like the more restrictions there are, the more problems there are.

I do not recall any of these mass murders etc in school when I was a kid.

No try leaving guns in the open in a car, much less an unlocked car today. Its a question of who will be there first, the police or the criminals.

My high school hired a Marine sargent to give the students PT. He was assigned to oversee a local Reserve unit. (He had a limp and I think he had been given an easy job to round out his years.) Anyhow, be brought around 45 (enough for the biggest class) Garands and bayonets which he stored at the school in a closet. All of the 12 to 15 year old students became very good at close order drill, etc, stripping the rifle, etc. Only a couple of the kids got their thumbs caught. We had to be good because he seemed mean (at the time) when he became displeased and we learned that we did not want to displease him.
