High school student buys Colt 45 at gun show

At 16, on the way home frm high school I stopped in a gun store and purchased an Enfield pistol ($5) and walked (about 4 miles) home thru town carrying it in my hand.
(My first weapon was won at a school festival (on school grounds). I was 15 and had a choice of a single shot 22 pistol or a single shot 22 rifle. I took the rifle.)

Ah, those happy days!! In the late 1960s, I bought a No. 4 Mk. I Enfield, a Remington 1903 and a 1917 Eddystone (not on the same day!!) from a department store (In a mall, no less!). I know I carried them around when I looked at some other stuff in the store on my way out. It amazes me how lax gun laws and feelings were in those days - somehow, there were no mass murders on the scale we have today with our "enlightened" opinions about guns!

When I was in high school I was on the school Trap team. Used to bring a shotgun and ammo to school once a week. Kids used to bring guns to school all the time to go hunting right after school. It was never a problem and it seems like only yesterday to me. I was class of 76 so I am still a younster.

I was 10 when i ran into a friend of my dads who started me on the path to gun collecting 18 years ago. My eyes boggled when he used to open up his gun cabinet and let me check out his surplus goodies!
He told me how when he was in high school (early 60's) he reworked an enfield in shop class because he needed a new hunting rifle. He carried it back and forth to school on the bus with his fellow classmates day after day and stored it in his locker when he was in his other classes for the day......never a single problem. He even got an A on his project from the shop teacher.
Fast forward to the late '90's when i was in highschool and had a buddy get in trouble for having a picture of him holding his rifle, behind the deer he shot. Crazy how bad things have got.

awww....AWWWWWWw man that is a nice looking and for $165??!?!?!?! geez its too bad that a similar looking one would now fetch $1000 in good condition.

it's amazing to me how the politicians are just not using their heads anymore. if they make a gun restriction law its not the criminals who will say "dang...i guess i can't buy that AK47 anymore", because they will get it anyway. its the citizens who will be hurting with all these restrictions because the bad guys have and will never follow the laws. its such a sad thing to see all of these anti-gun groups touting that more guns=more violence when it has been proven that in fact the opposite is true and has been proven. there are countless stories of robberies, home invasions, and crazy person rampages stopped by a person with a gun however no one hears about this; why? because if it were to hit the news that "tragedy was averted today when a murderous rampage was stopped cold by a citizens and their firearms". something like that would shred the arguments of the anti-gun groups. people would be running to their gun stores purchasing firearms to protect themselves. i have seen a few interviews with convicted criminals who openly say they wouldn't rob someone if they even thought that they had a gun.

It is very sad. I am 16 almost 17 years old (class of 2009) and some people think it is weird that I am into guns. Interesting how times have changed. Although I have notced that for every person that thinks im crazy there is one who thinks its cool. I am fortunate that I live in Indiana where gun laws are not all that tight and people tend to be more accepting of gun owners. To me, its kind of cool being one of the only if not the only kid in the school to own WWII weaponry. It is also nice that eventhough my parents do not share my firearm hobby with me, they are still willing to work with me when it comes to my collection. What's very funny is how popular my small weapons assortment is to friends who come over and see something new all the time. Hehe

In 1976 I got a bicentinnel ruger mini-14 my dad ordered for me,we had a play going on at school a western with a shooting scene,teacher was wondering how to do the sound effects of course I volunteered had a good supply of .223 blanks. Teacher thought it was great well night of play full auditorium I was backstage peeking around the curtains when I let the first round off [ for effect ] welllll it worked I swear the whole audience jumped up a foot in their seats in unision I will never forget that moment it was great !!!
Can't tell you how many times I went to school with mini-14 or a 30-06 laying on the back seat no one ever said anything shoot the doors woundn't even lock on my 66 mustang no one locked their cars or pickups most boy's had rifke racks with rifles in back glass of truck. W ish it was that good again !

In 1978 Jr High in Montgomery Al. a buddy brought a cheap .22 revolver to class for a science project, he demostrated how it functioned, He made a good grade! Allways had guns in the car, in hi-school, 11th grade history teacher took us out on the football field and showed us how to load and fire a TN. long rifle, shot it into a bank on the far side of the field at a Coke can! Seems like we are going backword some times?

i recall in high school the biology teacher was way into shooting [and making] black powder handguns , if you were a member of the biology club you got to tinker and shoot , often durring studdy hours ---but then there were all those critter cages you had to clean , and the feeding schedules , and the plant watering , and the record keeping .............but he bought the powder and lead ,

Guns in school
my college has a gun room at the college "police" department. think ive used it once in my four years. ive always got guns while at school and everybody knows i do.

that reminds me that my college had a gun safe available to students who stayed in the dorms. i never used it though because i didn't own any firearms then.

In 1973 I purchased my first gun at my high school from a retired cop who was the security guard at the school. Imagine that today! It was a well worn S&W M-15 that can with several boxes of FMJ .38 military ammo. Since I had it reblued and it is a joy to shoot and a looker too! Still treasure it as it also came with some great stories, I only wish he still had the 20ga, Ithaca auto gun that he carried.

Class of '65, got an "A" for military firearms display in science and scored a P 38 from the AG teacher.
