I have a 1943 Tikkakoski barreled [SA] marked Finn M/91, but I'm having trouble dating the receiver which is what counts when it comes to U.S. laws. I can't find a date anywhere and the underside of the tang is completely blank and doesn't appear to have been scrubbed.

There is what sort of looks like a Westinghouse mark (<--M or maybe W-->) on the top of the tang with a "1" and maybe a partial "G", and the underside of the receiver has two marks that I really can't make out. Of course there are marks from literally every single factory on other parts, but it's a Finn so none of that means much, right?

Post 16 here suggests that it might be pretty old:

According to this page, I have a shallow drilled receiver bolt hole, no tapped hole, stepped tang, fully machined right side, inner receiver ring
( http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinReceiver.htm )

And note #2 says: "2. Chatellerault production ended in 1895 and Sestroryetsk in 1918, Remington and New England Westinghouse were 1915 to 1918 only". Was NEW really only 1915-18?

The underside of the receiver and barrel where they meet each have a 279. Since this is a Tikka (new) barreled Finn, that would have to have been done after the parts were matched up, but the 279 doesn't match the barrel's serial. What's going on with that? I'm a little confused. Any ideas? :)

Certainly looks like a Westinghouse receiver to me. Westinghouse only made rifles from 1915-18 so your receiver will fall somewhere in that time frame.

Can you please post a photo of the whole length of the rifle, and the marks on the barrel shank?

Thanks for the quick replies!

Make that a 43 Tikka, not 32.

Oh and another question while I have your attention... :)
Why is there a Tula hammer under the magazine tang? I thought Finn models got new stocks. (Yes, mine has the Finn rounded finger spliced stock)

Is there a similar mark in a similar place on the magazine housing? It could just be an impression made in the wood from a stamp on the housing...

Or the rear half of your stock is from a Russian M91, but it doesn't look like it...

The 279 is a Finnish assembly marking to keep the pieces together once they are paired they were match numbered. The Westinghouse's were not marked on the tang bottoms so anything there is more than like assembly process inspection related markings there. Stocks seem to always have lots of unknown and extraneous markings. I sort of look what is there but don't try and put too much meaning to it unless I know immediately what it means. Nice rifle by the look of it! I have a couple from that era that really shoot well, let us know what she will do at the range. Congrats you got a nice one! Bill
