So called "suicide boat helmet" No one is certain where & what helmet was used for. Some say bomb desposal but I feel it's either landing barge pilot or ship board exposed gunner helmet.

Sure it ain't a "talker",with a little extra room inside for a gun director's phones? We and other navies had those too.I recall the human landmine guy that had to squat in a hole and wait for American tanks, they gave him a 500lb bomb,a hammer, and a helmet,,,,wtf was the helmet for??

No room for phones. There are a few of these helmets around. Very heavy helmets to wear so it would have to be for a specific use.

I'm sure you are aware of the article in B'ZAI that these were sniper helmets, and my 'reply.' Author got really pissed, said he would get proof from his contacts overseas. No further word and he is no longer a member. If you want to contact him and see if he has any more info I'll supply contact info. He also knows about an u"nderground airfield" on New Britain! He was told by local you could look through a hole and see planes and runway?

Garfield and I speculated that was the demise of the IJA, planes took off too soon and hit ceiling???

This navy helmet is gray painted. Instead of rivits cloth liner is held in by cotter pins. Shell is thicker, heavier & of a different guage metal than standard type 90. Insignia is nickel plated early style. Helmet might of been made either made aboard ship or in occupied country.

Come on, you have to admit you're getting off on this - right? Get a camera & do this on your own like a big boy! You can do photos like this yourself if you want to. That's some really cool stuff.
Honestly, you are guilty of 'fellow collector abuse' by not showing us all your great stuff. I don't know how you can stand the guilt.

Over $12,500 for a helmet? Even if it was the only one in existance I find that a rather high price for a helmet. I guess there are some SERIOUS Japanese paratroop helmet buyers out there.

Think of all the complete snipers/takedowns/what-have-you you could buy with all that cash.

Did their parachutes open before they hit? Or...Did their life preservers save most of them????

Jareth, I've got a Navy helmet with a liner that has what A.E. Hamilton referred to as "rough side out". Actually, both sides of the liner is rough. He said he had never seen one like this. Having limited experience with helmets my question is;is this something not usually encountered or what? Picked this up at a garage sale in 82 for 20 bucks with net...couldn't afford another 25 for the double-decal german helmet that was there.

Jim, not uncommon or rare to find more of a suede or coarse/rough cut of leather used in late navy helmets. You will find this type of liner pad usually in the yellow paint stencilled anchor helmets.
