Hey Bayonet Collector,
That would be great, I have a terrible time with translations, I understand what they say, but I do not do well expressing it in English. Post cards are pretty easy, for the most part they say, I am well, thanks for the package, and heartfelt wishes to you and the family. It is pretty much the same in all languages, but there are a few smal gems hidden in the cards.
The difficult cards are the ones from H Siebertz's Cousin, Heinrich Kuhl, who was a POW in France.

My dearest!
I send you today a photo from a village (Ihen?) before Arras. We have fought hard there. I'm fine. I hope the best for all of you. With many greetings your nephew and cousin. Heinrich Siebertz.

Thank you heartfelt for the cigars I received. They tasted (Schmeckten, Schmesten is not correct) very well. At the moment I'm better as we are now resting. I hope that will last longer. I hope the best for you and greet you all heartfelt. Your nephew and cousin H. Siebertz.

Hey Bayonet Collector,
You are right, I tried to get Schmechten out of theat word, but it would not come. Here it is.

There is no question you are right, but the "c" is not there and his "h" looks a lot like an "s".
I am pretty sure that 8 AK is 8 Armee Korps rather than Arbeitskompanie.
Thanks.

I'm sure you're right. I just had in mind that he is at that point in a road construction unit and thought of the name we have for our soldiers that are not fighting units, but do manual labour (arbeidskompani), so - logical as the thought may have been it may also have been utterly wrong...

Hey BC,
I had the advantage over you as I knew that these boys lived in the region of the 8th Armee Korps.:) Otherwise, I suspect I would have made the same deduction.
Best wishes

It should have been written as "Schmeckten" not everybody was/is a language specialist, certainly not in a time were dialect was normal. For myself I'm glad that local dialects have an interesting revival.
Playing now with my daughters PC, mine has been definitely killed by a "warmth virus". Back in business tomorrow! Bayonetcollector, are you forgetting the translation of the last "Rosalie transcription"?
BTW, nice postcards Gustaf ... good transcriptions also :).

Welcome back, my friend. No, I'm not forgetting it, but was only back in business yesterday myself after a pretty stressful time here. It so happened that that was the time when Gus posted his postcards. I'll get to both the Rosalie letter and the rest of Gus's stuff shortly.

Hye you BCs,
I do not want to put any pressure or get inthe way of the "Rosalie papers". I thank you both greatly for the help.

Hey Gus. No pressure and you are not in the way of the Rosalie papers at all. :) I have been out of circulation for a while as my personal business and work have severely limited my board time, and that alone is the cause why the Rosalie papers have been lagging behind. Seeing your posts I decided to get to them first, but never intended to leave those letters behind either. Do not worry. For my part things should be easier from here on, though there may still be periods of time where I cannot spend as much time on the boards as I wish to.

Hey Bayonet Collector,
As long as you are taking time from the boards for family or friends, that is great, but I draw the line at work.
Best wishes

Cool

I just scanned a bunch of my great uncle's war discharge papers and things like that. I can post photos, but cannot get these files small enough to post. Any help would be appreciated. The postcards are a fantastic insight into life 90 plus years ago. All the stuff I have is from stateside at Basic and after Henry's discharge. The actual "war" is strangely vacant from the papers i have.

You mean this clown? :D. Found him on the net. I'm not surprised he used words I never heard before in my life.

OK YOU knuckleheads, why do you not answer bootleggerspub's question about posting photos, insteAD OF PICKING ON THE POOR sWEDE, STUPID CAPS LOCK , I manage to hit it nearly every time.

bootleggerspub,
you need to take your image to your photo shop and reduce the format, I can not remember how big is the best, but I think I make mine 600 pixels wide, so the viewer does not haVE TO SCROOL back and forth. If you host your images with photo bucket, they automaticly reduce the image to about 800 pixels across (I think anyway)
