Hi,

I recently found a rather worn but matching Gras 1866/74 carbine de cavalerie that is missing the stock, the screw that hold the bolt in place and the screw that goes from the back of the receiver to the trigger guard. I tried the usual places in the US, but no luck in finding the parts for this old warhorse. Anyone have suggestions or thoughts how to breath life back into this old girl? Also, how generally rare were the carbine de cavalerie? Were they made in large numbers?

Is this the same as the 74/80? If so it uses the same bolt screw as the gras infantry rifle. I got a new screw for the trigger guard made by a gunsmith, shouldn't be too hard. The stock will be your big problem, I doubt you'll find one ever. I "rescued" one that'd been tribalized then all the brass salvaged. I lucked out with the brass parts, someone rescued them from a carbine that'd been converted to a lamp and then thrown out! I have a homemade middle band I'll send you if you want it, but unless you can make the stock it's all moot...

Just seen this thread. There are any number of Gras converted to shotguns and with cut back stocks for sale here in France at @ 165$US. Not accurate stocks for a Carabine de Calvalrie but one of these would get you up and running by swapping out the shotgun action for yours. I use a 20 gauge example as I can't afford a proper Gras.

Hello yulzari,

Thank you for the info. Is it likely to find an uncut rifle stock among the collection of Gras converted to shotguns? I have a Mle 1874 Infantry rifle that I bought for parts that had a severely damaged stock. It would be nice to find a replacement stock for the barreled action.

JPS. Full length stocks are exceedingly rare and more expensive., Both because civilian buyers wanted a civilian shotgun look and because others wanting to restock rifles used them in the past.
