First, just gotta say thanx to Allan and his Armory. He went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure I would be happy with this rifle. Great guy, great Company.

I've been wanting a 9.3x62, just waiting for the right rifle to come along. 98 action, set up for scope, bore looks great.

Side scope mount, good shape, locks up tight.

Also d&t for weaver mounts.

Model 640, made in '53? (rear sight is single blade dovetailed into bbl.)

Are sight hoods available?

How about replacement levers?

From Allan's description, my first thought was to restock the rifle. After discussing with him it sounded like a simple 'pin thru the wrist' job. Heck, now I'm thinking I can work thru the inside of the tang and not have anything showing 'cept the repaired crack.

Any loads for jacketed bullets appreciated.

I would think a good machine shop could reproduce you scope rail locking lever. I would have them only take it to 80% my self to save some $$$ and do the final shaping/filing, polishing and bluing myself. Rust bluing small parts is easy.

Try some of Prvi Partizan's ammo from Graf and Sons. It shoots pretty good in my 9.3x62. Also see the Moose thread below for reloading ideas.

Sight hoods are available, mount levers are not.

It is interesting to see the upside down 3 in your serial number. This is a very common occurance with 640's in the 130,000 range. Your's at 157,xxx is very late in the 640 production run.

Thanks for posting. Really neat rifle with a lot of character. Please keep posting your shooting and hunting results with it.

I personally would not pin the wrist. That crack can be fixed a number of ways. My personal opinion is that if it is visible from the top only, remove the action and drill holes from the inside back under the crack and use a syringe {get them at a feed store} that fits the hole closely and inject Acraglas into the holes. The pressure should squirt some up thru the crack where it can be wiped off, but the filling of the crack and holes should stabilize that crack quite well.

Then relieve the stock inletting behind the tang so the tang does not touch the stock and you should be go to go.

Thanx everyone. I couldn't be happier with this thing.

I'm pretty sure Scott Stonehill will make the levers for me, anyone got a reference for a sight hood?

My trigger guage only goes to 4.5 lbs, this one feels about like 5 lbs. I may fool with that if I have the time or money.

I hadn't noticed the upside down 3, the 2 must have fell under the bench.

Thanx again for all the info.

Congrats on the new rifle! Looks like a real keeper. A friend and I recently purchased two Model 46 9.3x57 rifles from Allan. Fast, friendly service and the rifles were exactly as he represented/described on his web site.

Here's some Reloder 15 data.

Cheers!

Baribal gives excellent advice about reducing the powder charge and working back up. It never hurts to be cautious and careful especially with an older rifle. Also, these loads are probably a little warm for small ring actions and 96 or earlier Mauser actions.

Just FYI: In my CZ 550 rifle, 58.0 grs of RL-15 produces a chrono average of 2390 fps (instrumental) with a 286 gr Woodleigh round nose.

Cheers!

Great stuff, thanx!

I always start conservative, and usually find the best accuracy way before signs of pressure. I had planned on trying the woodleighs first, with some IMR powders.

I enjoy trying out new loads with a new rifle, even better when you find the load!
