Picked this one up, unfortunately missing the scope so I'm going to be on the search for one. really well made and very light, all numbers matching, set triggers are light and crisp, bolt is real smooth. bore is mint. nice tiger stripes. dont really know much about these, just that I wanted a decent one to go with a couple other Mauser sporting rifles I have. This one replaces a lesser example I had also missing scope. (bubba reblue, drilled and tapped for weaver mounts)

the only two real issues are someone put a sissy pad on and lost the original steel buttplate (with how light this rifle is you almost cant blame them) and the rear action screw is slightly buggered as it is stuck and someone tried to remove it.

Here are some lousy cell phone pictures, will take some better ones Tuesday.

An interesting rifle of quite trim lines! Yet when you speak of the recoil pad being one of the real issues, you may be underestimating. As I understand your desire to acquire and install a period scope and associated components to fit the original mount bases, that will likely be a considerably larger undertaking!
Best of luck!
My take.

Thanks! I already have a correct Gerard Model K scope in the appropriate observed serial range so it will be a matter of locating the rings of which I have only see two sets for sale in the last 3 years so that may take a while but eventually I will find them.

The recoil pad has to go, though I'm quite familiar with how brutal these rifles can be. My other small ring 98 sporter with the claw mounts is a bit lighter and only a 21" barrel. Also quite regularly shoot Kar.88 with their short 17" barrel. I havent found these Danzig guns to be any worse as far as recoil.

hopefully will be getting a range report in Friday.

8x57,

I have one just like yours, a little more used and the Reichswehrmontage scope bases are missing on mine. It also has a 1930's style red rubber butt plate on it. They do have some recoil. Did yours have the sling swivels?

I have been trying to find a few small parts but no luck so far.

The big thing is the scope bases. I have talked to rifle people in Germany who have never seen a set of the bases. They are rare. Great find.

This one does have both front and rear sling swivels. Even has the cover for the front scope mount.

Post some pictures of yours if you have the chance.

Took it to the range today, 100 meters off the bench. My own hand loads, 180gr nossler ballistic tip over 46.7gr imr 4895. That's 5 rounds. If this is what it can do without the scope I really can't wait to get a scope for it.

I'm surprised no one has tackled making reproductions - the front one is simple, but the back would require some skill.

For what it's worth, I've been building a database of these rifles and the highest serial numbers to date have been @ 6,500. I think production was only from 1919 to 1921.

Story,

The serial number on mine is in the 1450's. It has been used and isn't in the condition 8x57's rifle. Been busy up here with company and moose season. I will try to post some photos soon.

I think this was one I was following at auction. I logged back on to bid after giving it a bit of thought when it disappeared with a buy it now!
Glad it went to to someone who would appreciate it and also shoot it. As it should be.

Sir,
I must say that your sporting Mausers are a sight for sore eyes! Thanks for distracting me from work. And, if indeed you are located in the anti-gun state of Massachusetts, as your "handle" suggests, kudos to you for "bitterly clinging to your guns and religion"!

Enjoy your fine guns! Great freehand shooting, by the way.

8x57,

Just a couple photos to show you what is under the bases on your rifle. I would sure like to find a set of the bases but no luck so far.

Finally was able to locate a scope to complete this rifle.

Scope arrived today. Surprisingly it fit fairly well. A little snug so I might have the front ring moved back just a hair but honestly I don't really think its needs it.

I thought/it was listed as a 4x scope, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is in fact a 6x scope. Markings are as such/pictured:

Top of scope - OIGEE Berlin
right side - D.R.P. Nr 305004
left side - LUXOR 6x 108503

Came with original Oigee lens caps, the strap is broken but I have some old black leather slings that i can cut a fresh strip of leather from and repair them.

Here is an overall, rifle looks good. I will add that compared to the 4.5x Gerard scope on my double claw sporting rifle this Oigee is a monster, heavy, bigger and longer by at least 1.5"
