I would like to get some additional opinions on this gewehr 98. It is made by DWM in Berlin in 1916. Butt plate, barrel, receiver, mag plate, stock all match. No import marks. Seller is asking $950. Wanting to pull the trigger but the pitting on the barrel bothers me. Bolt and magazine plate dont seem to match.

The stocks were numbered around the pistol grip area. Was that all sanded off? It seems hard to find an all correct gun. The bands and just about every bit and piece of metal were numbered. For me, the trick is not finding a perfect gun. The problem is the guns that dont measure up to collector grade (for lack of a better word) that is priced accordingly.

You may want to look down the inside of the barrel too. Pitted and worn would not be a showstopper for me,but is bore condition be reflected in the price.

I dont see $1000 there. I was looking at one worse today for $1500!! Sanded to heck and forced match on many parts. I am at a loss. You would think with 3 million produced the dog examples would sell for less?

Obviously I cannot help with the $$$. I put a watch on this discussion.

For what it’s worth, I recently picked up a very nice Danzig bolt mismatch at a gunshow for half that price. Unsanded stock and immaculate bore. However the only slight problem was that the receiver was polished slightly.

What I paid is probably on the lower end of the spectrum so not a good representative of the current value. I would offer $700 and see what happens….

That’s actually what I was thinking. I have not seen Gewehr 98’s going for less than $900. Even BMM rifles. If you want to pay less than that, you have to get a turked rifle

Surprised at the prices now. Got my all matching Bavarian for $900 couple years ago and at the time I was kicking myself for spending that much.

I don't see $950 either, for a collector piece or even a casual shooter. Clearly the metal parts have had the wire wheel treatment to try to brighten them up and reduce the impact of the pitting. Major league downer IMHO - rather have a dirty pitted original than a pitted wire wheeled make-over. Agree with above comment on the barrel: if it is pitted like the outside of the barrel, walk away. I'd also ask to see barrel, receiver and mag assembly under the woodline - very possible the pitting there is worse, particularly any place wood and metal touch.

Appears to be a decent posssibly restocked ? rifle the original stock would have more acceptance marks ..In my observations it has a discreet NAC next to /into the barrel Serial which is an import mark (not sure whose tho)..Bore cond. ? that price is steep IMO. .Id offer more around $750 ish..

My $.02. It is certainly not a perfect example, but then again it is 106 years old and they aren't making them anymore. A few years ago I was on the hunt for a Gew98 and had a dickens of a time finding one that hadn't been messed with in one way or the other. I wound up paying $800 for a 1916 DWM that is all matching except for the bolt sleeve. Mine has certainly seen some use but as I pointed out, most WWI era Gewher 98's have been around the block a few dozen times.

$1000 may be the new norm for one in the condition that one id in.

I paid 600.00 for my import marked 1917 Mauser Oberndorf 2 months ago. Glad I scooped it up at that price.


Now if we go back 26 years ago, I paid 150.00 for my import marked 1917 Kornbusch & Co GEW98........how cheap G98's were back then........

It is all matching… My impression is that the stock has been cleaned- remnants of the cartouches appear to be there. Metal finish looks to be in good shape?
As Ive learned in my search- the unfortunate reality is that prices have gone up for these matching examples- turk’d examples seem to be fairly stable at the $6-$700 range. Watching those Lock Stock and Barrel auctions- make me think $1200 is a great deal! Ha!

What constitutes a (Turk'ed) example? ....anything besides a crescent moon on the receiver?

Personally a cleaned stock is a No Go for me on vintage rifles. No way I’d go $1200 for that scrubbed wood atrocity 😂

Stock is also later than the rifle. Takedown discs began in 1916.

Bought this in 2009 for $350 from a gun shop. Bolt and a few small parts mismatch. Not choice but I was glad to get it and I think was about $100 under market value at that time. I was on the rebound from a missed opportunity at a lesser condition example from two years before. However...I don't see this one as worth 3X what I paid 13 years ago.
